Farewell Yessers & On to Vercelli

A travel blog entry by eldonsteeves on May 02, 2015

We drove almost 3 hours this morning to get Ed and Sue to their hotel for one night. They were hoping to see the last supper and the La Scala opera house. I hope they were able to do that. Eldon and I drove a little over an hour to the town of Vercelli. We had hoped to see the Duomo, but it was closed. So we walked over to the Basilica di Sant'Andrea. This was a 13th century church. We drove to ...

Today was the last official day in the Aosta Valley. I am leaving the castles and snow tomorrow. I saw some pretty impressive fortresses today and met lots of nice people. Great surprise, As I was walking through Donnas, one of the men that I met in Monjovet was riding by on his bicycle. He turned around, came back to me just to say hello and good journey. Then he was off again. I did spend some time in Moses mode today as well. There were parts ...

I hope to stay at a campground that saves one camp trailer for pilgrims but if it is closed, I will need to go a short distance more for a ...

I am using the "Official Guidebook" to the Via Francigena. It uses all kinds of abbreviations like FP for footpath or KSO for Keep Straight On. But I could figure out VS until today. Very nicely said, it means "Very Steep". Could also be translated to "suitable only for goats", "am I in Spain" or "I should have trained harder". I thought that I was set for another very comfortable day like yesterday. I was over confident at best. ...

Aosta to Fenis

This was a very nice 20K walk. I took the upper route which was predominately off-road on wide hiking trails. There were signs with interesting factoids along the route which told about the different trees, history and views. The area's history is very Roman. It is said that Pontius Pilate stayed in Nus on his way to exile in France. The entire irrigation system dates to ancient times. There were also lots of walnut trees which ...
