Our initial impression of Ghent (en route to our hotel from the station) was disappointing but, once we got to the historic centre, we changed our minds. It's much larger than Bruges and so its outskirts are more modern and ordinary.
Like Bruges, Ghent has lots of narrow cobbled-stoned streets, a river winding through the city and fabulous old buildings! A lot of the buildings are very dirty with age and need restoring, so we ...

... cherries. It was okay but I only drank it because I was in Belgium, the beer capital of the world (and it was a lot cheaper than bacardi, lol). There was no meat due to the public holiday so I ate spaghetti with veges, which was nothing flash. There was lovely background music (in English) and it was nice to watch the locals enjoying themselves.

(I think I got the best deal there!) I don't think I've ever had a facial before, but it was nice and made my sore eczema-ey skin feel a lot better! ...

We left Bruges and drove south east for 50 km to visit Ghent. We were still waiting for news about when we could get the van repaired and decided that we probably had time to see another Belgian town before heading back to France. We arrived in camp and after checking in, headed straight to town on the bus. We had picked up a map in the same series as the one we had for Bruges and had particularly looked at their food suggestions. Since it was lunchtime, ...

... We talked and laughed for a while and since it was pretty empty we became friends with the waiter. I asked him where to get good fries and he told me this soul food place down the street. Then he must have gone to lunch or something because a little while later he comes back and handed us a huge bag of fries! I don't think a group of tourists has ever been so happy. They were gone in seconds. It was delicious, and probably ...
