Now that Europe has switched over to standard time, the sun is out til 8pm - a bit strange but nice as it pretty much feels like early summer with the T-shirt weather. So that's Lucerne in an afternoon. Unless you're thinking of doing daytrips to nearby Pilatus or Titlus, one day is probably good, and you'll also have time for a boat ride (free I'm told if you have a Swiss pass).
