Part 1 - The first half

Saturday And so it begins. An early alarm was followed by a fairly uninterested, if a little cramped, trip to Manchester Airport in the Bradley's BMW. Kit slept all the way up there as is standard when he gets into a car, whilst everyone else just sat there cramped. We arrived at the airport, checked in, then proceeded to wander around and kill about 3 hours until the flight. We shopped, we drank and we played Sega Rally, usual rubbish. The flight was nothing of any interest, 3 1/2 hours, no ...

The 2nd half

Wednesday Another morning, another hangover. Me, K and C forced ourselves out of bed for breakfast and hit the slopes about 11. B decided he needed more sleep and was to meet us later on. The decision was made for another day on the gondola as the air was clear and we expected the view to be good to. This plan was only slightly thwarted when we found that, due to high winds, you could only get half way on the gondola. A quick glance on the maps revealed that all was not lost and a cheeky red ...

Rila Monastery

... hauptsaechlich Bulgaren.

I was in the mountains but couldn’t hike

A lot of Americans celebrated and had fun on this day but not me. I went to the central bus station on time to catch an early bus but somehow the cashier sold me a wrong ticket so I missed the bus, and then she refused to give me the refund. The first really unpleasant experience for this trip. And the day didn't get much better after this. I ended up catching a later bus to Bansko, but because of that I ...

Sofia to Rila Monastery

... back and continued on to Rila Monastery. We arrived early afternoon and found that a room was available so decided to stay overnight at the Monastery. The Monastery is in a forested valley and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was first built in 927 and has 300 monk's cells in buildings surrounding the Nativity Church. It continues to be a working ...

Borovetsis suusatamas

Rila Monastery

... mustn't forget that we are on a UNESCO World Heritage Site tour, not a get-drunk-in-foreign-land tour (oh wait, isn't Natasha doing the latter as well?) Did I mention that we almost left to Belgrade, Serbia on a whim tonight? All the choices we have are overwhelmingly exciting. Belgrade, however, is way too out of the way and is supposedly a huge party place (which we don't do, nope), so we head to Veliko Tarnovo tomorrow as planned.

Rila and Pirin Mountains

... During a hike on a trail it's possible to see interesting geological formations, clear waters and natural forest with high level of biodiversity. Dancing Bears Rescue Park

... managed to free, and is now home to, 25 bears. Even though the training of bears has been prohibited in Bulgaria since 1998, as of May 2007, there were still 3 registered dancing bears held in captivity. Fortunately, in June of 2007, these last 3 bears were transferred to the park and there are now (officially) no dancing bears in Bulgaria. The park tries to provide the bears with a natural ...

Tuesday March 07 - Day 4

Day 4 - Tuesday POWDER DAY!!!! We woke up on Tuesday morning to between 30 and 40cm of fresh powder! This was most people's first experience of skiing/boarding in powder and everybody agreed that they loved it! The fresh snow was a welcome sight as the runs had been getting a little dry and icy in patches and this snow would get us through the rest of the holiday. Tuesday also yielded the first full ride up the Gondola. This section of the resort had ...
