The Iya valley is sold in the guidebooks as undiscovered hidden Back to nature Japan. So I was ready for a rushing river and long hikes. And then there is the famous vine bridge crossing the Iya river, a feat of old timey engineering. But I should have remembered that in Japan , if there is something cool to see there is definitely going to be bus parking. So, I stayed in a little guesthouse ,Kel Na Sob, perched ...

... As we were running out of time before the park was due to close we practically ran around the park and managed to do most of the 1hr & 40 minute walk in 30 minutes, whilst also carrying 15kg each!!

Next stop Kotohira and a ryokan ...

... Turned out he was 63years old and hiked 10km up the mountain every day to a 1000m height, with 10kg weights in his bag. It kept him healthy (and crazy young looking as my guess was 40yrs or so). He practised this way every day as he loved to make frequent mountain climbing holidays to France or Austria. What a man!! What an inspiration! And he reminded me so much of a Korean man I met in 2007 on a train who read my future in my palms but who also climbed a mountain each day. He was ...

... coffee in a seriously old-fashioned thing. It squeaked and bubbled like a whole science lab. But the coffee was goooood! And pretty cheap for Japan, where a cuppa usually costs more than twice the price of a beer! All jacked up on the black medicine I strolled along the river and then along the main road which is lined with palm trees and leads to mount Bizan. I was amazed over how quiet it was. Calm. So unlike other Japanese cities I been to. I aimlessly walked around and ...
