... to get off the train, and there was a band playing along the riverside.

When we tried to ask what was happening, no one spoke enough English to say anything other than 'ebento-desu' – 'it's an event.'

After a Google search last night we realised that there just so happened to be an anime festival in Tokushima for the next couple of days – Machi Asobi – what are the odds?!

Naruto is apparently famed for its "whirlpools" which occur twice a day when the currents change direction. In the park, there is a walkway underneath a huge bridge with glass bottomed sections where you can look at the sea below you. Given some of ...

... the mountain. Narrow paths right through Mamushi land. Add to that a thunderstorm with heavy rain which forced me to camp in the woods on the steep hill. There was another henro taking refuge from the rain and together we watched out for vipers and hoped for a sunny morning. Woke up this morning with no creepy crawlies in my tent and everything was dry which was nice. Hide, the japanese henro was up and about much earlier than me and started the hike on his own. ...
