Our first day in Rota!

We checked out of the Seville hotel this morning and got a taxi to pickup our rental car. Ed drove, while I setup my Garmin GPS, which I got a Spain map chip for. We had a great drive to Rota. The weather was perfectly sunny and warm. It was a great drive. We went directly to Playa de la Luz Hotel, where we were prepaid for the next 6 nights. As it turns out the hotel did not reopen from being closed for the winter. We were automatically rebooked at their sister hotel in Rota, Hotel Duque de ...

Rota Naval Base tour

We meet the Chief in charge of the base radio and TV station that I arranged to be our base escort at 0900 at the main gate. As it turns out, as the base is now totally run by Spain, so we were very restricted to where we could go and what we could take pictures of. Although we got a car tour of the entire base, I was only able to take very few photos. In any case, Ed and I enjoyed the base tour very much.

Rota beach walk

After our Naval base tour, we went back to the hotel to rest and get some lunch. We then walked the entire Rota beach boardwalk. I took LOTS of photos, but I am just posting a few of them at this time.

What Happened in Spain Part II

Hello again!
As I said previously, I'm going to jump around a bit and not just go day by day in this blog. Therefore, this entry begins on September 19th on a train heading to Cadiz, Spain. This was my first adventure in Spain with my friends outside of Cordoba, my first excursion.
Honestly, I can't even remember exactly how I met all the people I've become close with on this trip. Well, I guess that's not true. I already told you how I met ...

... and Cameron Diaz in it. I hope they get a part! Lunch was interesting and kind of like eating in a Chinese restaurant as the plates just kept coming! After lunch we said goodbye to the sons and continued walking and finally ended up back at the ship but not before taking a rest in the Plaza DE Espana across from the ship. When we were there the park cat ladies came by and fed the wild cats who were pretty friendly. Great ending to a very nice day!

Sherry Tasting and the Andalusian Horses

Today was the second and last excursion we did through Holland America. Jacqui had wanted to see the Andalusian horse show, and we could also get in a sherry tasting with it!

First off was the tour of the Gonzales Byass winery. I'm not a big fan of the normal sherries, but I love the sweet sherries. And it was cheap. I got a ...

We arrived to Nerja very late and couldn't plug in the address in our handy-dandy gps - so we had to call the owner in the UK to give us directions. it was kind of late by the time we got to the house (after midnight). ugh! this was a long, long day! But, we're excited to be at the beach for the next 7 days. Shae can't wait to get her feet wet in the mediterranean.
The Cadiz carnaval

I'd been to Spain for like a month now and I hadn't seen the sea yet, so I decided to change things and get a bit of suntan. I called up 3 friends, we packed ourselves to a comfortable train and after an hour or so we got off in Cadiz, an important harbour and a really nice city on the Costa de la Luz.

Although I went there for the first time in February, it was so warm that I could stay in the swimsuit and survive. We started with a cheerful visit in a ...

Rota

Housed beneath, discernible only by their synchronised feet, troops of sweaty, burly, good-humoured men shouldered the enormous weights and carried their beloved images for hours through the streets, a painstaking snail's pace and testament to the dedication of those involved. In contrast were the raucous crowds witnessing the procession. like over-groomed chipmunks, men women and children of all ages cracked ...
