... centuries when Nantes was the capital of the Dukes of Brittany. Given the souvenir shops selling all sorts of Breton goods it still seems to hold true that at least in spirit the city has links to the north west region of France that it once controlled.

... esteem as a good example of railway operations, are really the gloss on a rather dull offereing elsewhere in what is not really rural France but a conurbation of fairly large towns or cities that would, in the case of the UK be linked by at least an hourly service.

Just think about it the next time you want to catch a train from Lincoln to Leicester via Nottingham, or Birmingham to Sheffield via Derby - UK rail is actually not that bad!

... from the restaurant. Apparently the widow of the Marquis still lives there and it has been in the Goulaine family for thousands of years. We have never had time to properly explore the chateau so we plan to return for a more extensive visit but we did notice that the trees in front of the castle seemed to be painted in bright colours and designs. On closer inspection they were knitted tree cosies made by the knitting association in Haute Goulaine and on display for the public.

First morning we've woken to clouds. Rain is forecast so david packs his poncho and I the umbrella. Head off to visit the chateau, have walked round it a couple of times but plan to see as much as we can nd go back if needed. We wander round the courtyard, then along the walls. Our first super long train ride of the trip. The ride from Paris to Nantes seemed to take more time than physically possible. Once in Nantes we had a layover before our next train ride and were able to explore a absolutely gorgeous park. You can look at the photos and let your imagination fill in the rest.
