... first building which was completed was the gateway building in 1872. This building was used as a provisional living quarter Ludwig II when he visited the site, until the main citadel had been built.

The construction of the citadel started in 1872 and was finished twelve years later in 1884, though without all the final details completed. By that time, Ludwig moved in to the castle and lived there permanently. The whole castle as such stood ready 1892; which totals ...

While waiting for our turn we got a nice little rain shower that helped cool us off from such a hot day. Instead of the cable car back down the mountain, we decided to take ...

... decided to fly in and land on my lap, I usually don't tell Pete and just leave it fly away, but this was was, well, in a rather sensitive region. Needless to say, the first safe area to stop and I was out of the car. Danger subsided, we pressed on. Innsbruck on the surface initially lacked any really feel, we checked into the Ramada, across the road from a few Olympic facilities, one being the giant ski jump. Unpacked and we were out the door once more, this time ...

... reason it is worth paying for a tour at all. Inside the castle is dark and uninspiring, full of religious imagery on the walls and slightly mad in places. Well, it has an unnecessary grotto/cave that only he,ps explain why the guy who built it, King Ludwig, ended up receiving the latter day equivalent of being sectioned in his bedroom there. The tour is a very quick half an hour in broken English and tells you nothing ...
