Zoo & a bit of history

Matt and I headed off to the Koelner Zoo on the metro. It was lovely: very green, glass exclosures. There was a big family of elephants (about 16), 3 hippos who were having fun in the water and making loud noises and showing off their large teeth. Matt loved the orangatangs (the babies were playing) and the cheetahs (who were prowling up and down). A flock of flaming pink flamingo's and long legged ducks.

... in Trier. I am anxious to see if I can find the apartment building where I lived when my Dad was stationed there in 1957. I never forgot the address or its general location. Stay tuned.

The weather has been staying mild and promises to stay so for a while longer. We are looking forward to our trip south and back to some of the old haunts (especially the gasthofs). We will photo some of the finer culinary delights.

We were treated to wonderful home-cooked Dutch cuisine and had a fun time catching up after some ten years since they visited us in Canada.

They were kind enough to drive us to our other dear friends in the area as Andrea and Dan Roach only live about 40 minutes from the Ronckens. Dan is ...

Back to Gemund now to repack our bags as the weight limits on SAS are quite restrictive and we are going to have to make use of all 4x23kg checked baggage and all 4x8kg cabin baggage that we have between us. Hopefully Gav's ALDI baggage scales will weigh ...

          Pen-pals and long overdue visits

... with this generous family. It turns out that they have recently (ie: three days previously) purchased the house next door and their oldest son will be renovating it and living there. Their old neighbour had recently passed away and his children wanted the property sold. Its an older house, with a cellar underneath (huge man-cave potential here), living space on the ground floor, two bedrooms on the 2nd floor and another huge attic space on the 3rd floor ...
