Kathmandu, Nepal blummoIt was a tough, tough night. My phantom roommate turned out to be a middle aged Indian guy, who was sleeping soundly when I got into my room. He was also the world's loudest snorer. I had my share of snoring in dorms in China, and it never really bothered me that much but this was something else entirely. This guy upped the ante. He turned the volume up to 11, had a think and then turned it up to 12. You had to hear it to believe it. Needless to say, sleep was hard to come by... I reached som...
Kathmandu, Nepal lnb203Today was pretty much just a planning and admin day. The people I'd met the evening before had told me they were planning a trek around the Chitwan region, stopping off at isolated villages to stay in people's homes for the night. They told me it wasn't a common trek, and that no agency would be able to sort it out for us. However, one girl in particular seemed like the go getting all action type that is needed to organise this sort of thing, so I'd provisionally agreed to join them. Meeting ...
Kathmandu, Nepal lnb203NEIGH-PAL... :-) After a 7 hour bus journey from Pokhara, we arrived in Kathmandu and booked ourselves in to a hotel in Thamel, needless to say it wasn't hassle free, plenty of touts around and on the first glance we could see this area was just as touristy as Pokhara. Our first night here was good fun, we went for dinner with Lara and Andy (we all stayed at the same accommodation) followed by a few drinks on our roof top balcony, outside our room. Interesting to note, while we were in Kathma...

... or laughing too hard, but most likely all 3. Harvey, this amazingly funny British gay guy, got up on stage and started singing a Savage Garden song A Capella while the Nepali (and ourselves) waved our hands in the air from left to right. This was then followed by an all out Nepali dance party, where men dance with men and wave their arms in the air ever so gracefully. I had one older man that fancied me and kept ...

Afterward as we were walking toward our homes, and as he was telling me about his beautiful and smart girlfriend who had died two years ago, I fall almost thigh deep in a filthy storm drain. It splashes so high I got the sludge in my mouth and wouldn't stop spitting for an hour afterward, even after washing my mouth out three times with my new Ayurvedic soap and brushing my teeth. Why am I such a bloody klutz and what awful ...

No textbooks, notebooks or workbooks except a few tattered workbooks that look like they have been used for too many years.

If she could get approval from the government to open the school in addition to her already functioning child centre, these kids might have a future and will have a better future, maybe being able to break out of their families' cycle of poverty.

While I was there with Meera, a man showed up. He wears a monastic robe, is seated with the legs crossed. His left hand lying in his lap in meditation mudra, is holding the medicine bowl, while the right hand in charity mudra bolds a branch with fruit of the myrobalan, a medicinal plant found in India.

We nursed the precious statues all the way back to Kathmandu on the bus.

Patan, Nepal inoursuitcase... fyi, they prefer dollars and euros to rupees.

After Pashupati, it was back to Kathmandu and my date with some other travelers for St. Paddy's Day. Strange that my first ever green beer was in Nepal, but that's how it turned out. Best were the Nepali waiters wearing "Kiss me I'm Irish" shirts and funny green hats. But it didn't take long for the bar owner to let us know that the staff wanted to be kissed by the girls of our group, not the guys.
<br ...
Kathmandu, Nepal globehugger... by the feet in a gang at the end of the day for their efforts.

We had decided against taking a porter and a guide on our trek, thus going against the advice of just about every guidebook and institution. The employment of such people is a matter of personal choice but the moral arguments for and against represents something of a minefield to the would-be trekker who just wants a peaceful walk. On the one hand, some people think the employment of servants to carry ...
