A nice room, a grumpy reception, a good location. That's pretty much all you need to know. Worth what you're paying for.

... however, the surrounding countryside is pretty - vineyards everywhere and distant snow covered mountains. We detoured to Desenzano on the banks of Lake Garda. Clearly a summer holiday town but a beautiful town situated on the shores of a huge lake. The water is crystal clear. Lunch at local trattoria consisting of local trout - scrumptious, a walk around town, purchase of veggies and fruit from local markets and off to the autostrada. ...

      Not so glamorous Bergamo

Leaving Milano, we started the day with Bergamo which is an ancient town about 40 km east of Milan we've been hearing a lot about. I have to admit that it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. Maybe it's just me setting my expectation too high.
The old town (citta alta) is up on the hill and we had to take ...

... We were in awe (see all the pictures I took which does not do the view justice). After this, we walked around the city until we found the botanical gardens. Sadly, some of it was closed due to the cold (it had snowed a couple days before). So we decided to walk to the Castello di San Vigilio on the top of the mountain. We saw that this road would take us there and it looked short and straight. However, the ...

... of house red. Prices are crazy in the city centre. In the end, we did find one (one!) Restaurant which was sensibly priced and had quite a decent dinner, though still about twice what we were paying in Parma.

Anyway, enough of the moans, it's all part of the adventure! Joy was delighted with, and exhausted by, our visit to the Brera Museum, which not only has all her favourites in, but was also hosting a ...

      Milan to Florence

After the last morning at the conference I returned at lunchtime to catch a quick look at the Castello before we left Milan (Kerrie was happy for a second look). I was not disappointed – it had a real feel of a powerful lord's domain. The bullet train from Milan to Florence reached speeds of 245km/h and took just over 2 hours. We caught a taxi from ...
