Crazy ‘Chicken Buses’/Dangerous Landsl

... looked like the daughter was going to get sick all over Devin’s lap but we got lucky and pulled into town just in time!

On the last leg of the journey, that was supposed to be two hours but lasted three, we had the same family right in front of us. Luckily, no one got sick this trip but the turkey did get up close and personal… rubbing his head and wobbly neck on Devin’s foot! I think the passengers thought I was possessed ...

Running Hot

... no one was speaking English.

We arrived at the park entrance where every one had to pay the admissions fee 40Q (Adrenalina tour does not include this only the transportation and the guide). The next thing was everyone was required to get a flashlight because we will be walking back after the sun sets. For those who were not prepared, they could buy a flashlight and batteries at the store...probably for an ...

15 tonnes of Jesus

I am ashamed to say that our next destination was decided soley on me being jealous of my brother. He had recently visited Antigua and seen a huge lava flow down Volcano Pacaya. I saw his pictures and from that I decided that we had to go back to Antigua, just 8 hours backtrack. On they way we remembered that Semana Santa was beginning, the busiest time of year for this part of the world. Easter is huge here. Everyone goes on holiday ...

Fear and trepidation...

... mountain villages with hoards of colourfully dressed women and children carrying all their goods on the heads. Imagine putting all your shopping from Tesco's on your head and carrying it home. These people are strong and only about 5 foot high. Set down in Coban on supposedly a rare sunny day and find a cute little hostel with central garden patio and lazy hammocks. This is the life after a 4.30am start and travellers flu.

A Long day of Travel

... a week ago, high in the mountains. Than the next thing we know the drivers telling us we need to get out of the van and meet him at the bottom. We got out( along with everyone else) and head down this mountain, I swear I felt like we were illegal immigrants crossing the border...it was to funny to see all these people running down a mountain side. Eventually everyone makes it down to the bottom where ...

Marshmallow toasting on the Pacaya volcano lava

Yesterday during our action packed day I managed to book myself onto a volcano climbing tour, a must if you are in Antigua for a few days. Pacaya is an active volcano with the most tourists and most bandits so you have to go on a tour and be escorted by a guide and as it turned out various horses and dogs :) They picked me up at my hotel at 6am, luckily I am still not very with it with the time and am happy to get up or go ...

The Alta Verapaz Experience

The heart of the program. We spent 2 weeks in the Alta Verapaz region. We learned about the history of the area, we lived with Q'eqchi' (Kekchi) families, ate their food, slept in their houses and helped them reforest their land and we went on a Cloud Forest Hike for a couple of days. It was an amazing experience.

Heading south to Ross´ Paradise

... Chris and I being the oldest had to lead by example. The guide dropped a rope ladder, fastened to a big rock, over the side of a waterfall and proceeded to climb down with his last words being, "Follow me, Chris". Well, Chris carefully went over the edge and climbed down. A polite young man said to me, "Lady's first. After you." So I went over, water splahing in my face, Keen's sandals trying to find the rung below and trying not to look down. Finally ...

Pacaya and Antigua

... It was ladies night, so guys had to buy a beer downstairs before getting to the cheap beers upstairs. Needless to say, the beer was 4x times the price of anywhere else ($4+) and there were no cheap beers upstairs. But there were lots of stoopid American frat party kids (too young to drink back home, no doubt) being loud, trust fund kiddies in pashminas and dreads, tarted up local girls and....ahhh, ****, why do i bother.

With that price and company, that was the worse ...
