Time for a little wine drinking....

... house on the side of the road. Still, delicious! Had a cappuccino, then headed back to Cape Town to, guess what – eat again! We met the Bakers for pizza – and not just any pizza – I had to get some of the bacon and banana pizza – um, delicious (again)!

The next day, we hit the road again – this time, to Cape Point, the place where many believe the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet (although it is actually a bit further east ...

... life skills work they are doing. The day consists of small amounts of work, play, life skills and break times (where there are varying levels of independence regarding making their own food). There are also occupational and speech therapy sessions. The children often go out, on walks to the park or the local shop, or to Judo lessons, horse riding or Eurythmi (a dance and movement therapy I am now helping with every week, this aims to improve ...

Seals along the waterfront

Took a little break to watch the seals resting and playing in the marina. Also went by the aquarium to reconfirm my booking to dive in the large shark tank next saturday. Probably won't be as dangerous as the great white dive, but should be just as fun.

... the tea which is grown nowhere else is exported all over the world and is a major part of the economy of the region. The plant is fairly inconspicuous and grass-like, in the early 19th century the early settlers began to harvest the wild plants to make a thirst quenching brew but it was not until 1904 that a Russian immigrant Benjamin Ginsberg recognised the commercial potential, and soon large scale cultivation began and a global market developed. It ...

... of wines, ice wines and ports...thank goodness it was only tasting and not real drinking. What a beautiful, sceanic day...weather was about 30 degrees. After our vineyard tours we headed down to the waterfront where we dined outdoors overlooking the bay; listened to an African singing group and wandered about some lovely shops.

Cape Town

... man, Joe, for about an hour. He told me all about Cape Town, its history, his life, and all the important things to do - obviously expecting a little contribution at the end, but it was worth it. I then went back to the hostel where I met one of my roommates, Monica, a young German woman who fell in love with Cape Town and can't decide if she wants to go back to Germany. We went to dinner across the street, where I found out that she is actually ...

... cheetah sanctuary and stuck our heads in the aviary. We plan to return because there was so many cool things and we were in a rush to catch the train back home. On Saturday the second(our two year celebration!), we attended an orientation for volunteers at the Red Cross Children's Hospital for their 'play therapy' program. We were enthralled with the theory but were very disappointed to find it required a police clearance that could take up to six weeks to ...

One month already?

Howzit? So, I have realized that I am not doing the best job keeping in touch with everyone or keeping things up to date since coming here. For all of you who have emailed me and I have yet to respond, this is addressing you. I have found that days fly by faster than I can imagine and internet access can be a rare occurrence. This past week marked one month of living in Cape Town. In reality, it doesn't seem like I have been living in this country for that ...

... such atrocities against humanity occurred so recently in history. The Apartheid era happened in my lifetime. It's hard to wrap my mind around that concept because the Civil Rights movement happened long before I was alive. Shouldn't the Apartheid have ended also? Why did we let it go on for such a long time? Why did the U.S. have to be dragged kicking and screaming to sanction and declare the South African government unjust? How did all ...

The end is near

The last day of the trip and it was party time. From the very moment we got on the truck there was a buzz. With ten of us getting off in Cape Town, as well as all the passengers from the other truck we were determined to enjoy our last truck day. The sides were up, the beach was up and we were waving to all and sundry during our short drive into Cape Town. Those who had been on the Wine Tour were still suffering badly with hangovers but not even this could take ...
