... along one avenue. Was a very wealthy town at one time and a separate principality run by the Garibaldi family before they went to Venice. Maze of lane ways behind main piazza with little shops and bars. Stopped for a beer in one place with a cellar restaurant. Hot and sweaty waterproof and jumper- but the Italians are rugged up in overcoats and scarves- think its a fashion statement. Went out again for dinner- down an interesting looking ...

... it seemed, was covered with neat and orderly vineyards - a feast for the eye in our daily ramblings around the region. We did have several gray-sky days and occasional rain, so our photos do not show the region at its best, however the vistas we saw were memorable. The alps near Turin were faintly visible at the best locations.

Thursday, October 16th, we began our drive out of Italy, toward the beautiful French alps around Chamonix!

We left Lake Como thinking that we had seen the most beautiful of God's work, the deep blues, greens and the village residences modest or palatial in primary colors. Lake. Como is large (actually two lakes converge ) deep blue , surrounded by mountains that climb directly from the lake. The homes that are built here all sit on uneven terrain, so lots of retaining walls, steps and more steps . We're staying at the Hotel Victoria, on the water and just spectacular. We all headed to a table overlooking the lake and toasted our good fortune . ...
