I am only stayin the night just to see the Matterhorn. The sun is out and I took a hike up nearby hill. It was about an hour and a half uphill walk with regular short stops to catch my breath. I think I have had enough of hiking now, I did 4 hours of it at Montreux as well, I must have the best **** at the moment. Spectacular view of the mountain at the hilltop though. It's less of a mountain and more of a giant pinnacle of rock. It looks menacing, to prove it there is a nearby graveyard full ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland tonkinDay One – Thursday 10th September – We got up early to say goodbye to our group before departing for the train station to go to Zermatt, our first stop in Switzerland! I was fortunately feeling a little bit better but still skipped brekky. Apparently Sarah had a similar experience the night before, so we thought maybe it was something we had both eaten the day before, but nevermind!
We were rushing a bit for the train and then learned the train station was ...
We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... on the snow with a lovely view from Mont Blanc on one side and the Italian plains on the other. In between there were dozens of skiers and snowboarders enjoying some summer runs. After our snow hike, we took a Tram down to do a 10K hike to Hornlihut, starting at 2500m. Tom was suitably freaked out by the ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... way up to meet Evie and Sue at the playground (after a 5 euro hot chocolate) and we all walked down through some delightful traditional Swiss towns.
... there was an oncoming car. But it was one heck of a beautiful walk. Besides, I had tons of time. When I finally got to Stechelberg, I had to find the gondola to take it to the village the hostel was on, called Gimmelwald. It really was half way up a mountain, on the side of a ledge. Of course you could walk up, but with a heavy pack and 2 hours up a steep mountain path, that seemed unrealistic. And the gondola company knew they had a ...
Gimmelwald, Swiss Alps, Switzerland dhrycun... running, sliding, and surfing down the loose rock and had quite a fun time getting down. We saw a peak to our left a tried to get to the top. LONG story short; it got to dangerous and we had to turn around. We took the hike back to our hostel and hung out there with the other travelers. There are actually 3 girls here from Minneapolis! Cards, pool, and a wood powered hot tub! I finished my night star gazing in a wood ...
Gimmelwald, Switzerland robertlevi... being rummaged through and slashed open. The theif was only looking for electronics (cameras, ipods, etc.) so he left everything but that stuff. Luckily I had put my pack somewhere else for the day, so mine did not get touched, but this kid from Texas got about a 15" cut up the main part of his backpack. I used my "Minnesota nice" and instead of going out, I sewed it up for him. After all the crazyness of that me and some other kids ...
