A belated howdy, Stephen and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Swedish chalet. My only disappointment was that the one activity I was looking forward to there, the 'dig your own hot spring' in front of the chalet, could not be done because earlier that day construction work had been done to redirect the river and make an official 'winter hot springs' there. : ( our host said "if you were here yesterday ...

... No pictures can describe the beauty of the scenery outside the window today. Our bus ticket was $34ish per person, for a local bus. It really should have been $300 and called a scenic bus trip. ... an umeboshi (pickled plum) factory and then went to Shirahama beach. The beach felt like Australia, probably because the sand is imported from there. We spent a few hours there and it was lovely weather. Unfortunately I got really sunburnt but it has gone down now. On Tuesday, it was rainy start to the day and we left at 7.30 in the morning. We ended up walking probably 10-15kms ...

... cutting dried lavender, weeding in the rice paddy and catching baby aigamo ducks (trying to catch them at least). Aigamo ducks are employed throughout Japan traditionally and currently as a natural weed eater in the rice paddies. They fertilize the fields as they go and keep out the bugs too. Catching them once they are in the paddy can be quite difficult however. We spent almost an hour in the dark of
night creeping back ...
