... St. Stephens and St. Barbara. Ruins of 1 were pointed out but could not see ruins of others. Some of them required ladders and hoists to access. There are dress regulations to get in the monastries but clothing is available for those who cannot comply. A couple of them only have women living in them, one of which does not allow visitors. Monday was the 1st full day of our tour in Greece. We headed off to the Acropolis with our very efficient, organised, militant tour guide Marina. What she didn't know about Greek history probably isn't worth knowing! As we sat at the base of the Acropolis hearing about its incredible history, we watched the clouds roll in, to be followed suddenly by incredible gusts of ...
... the Acropolis. We found a rickety table on a leafy terrace and ordered retsina, lamb and eggplant stuffed with fetta. Our last chance to enjoy more fabulous greek food. Soon after the terrace was filling with the affluent set and balalakia music started to play in the courtyard below.
As we made our way back to our hotel room in the fading light, the narrow cobbled streets of the old town and the endless laneways ...
... quite impressed with Lufthansa. We managed to jag a seat upstairs on our Airbus A380-800 (the largest passenger plane in the world). It was quiet, well serviced and almost pleasant as much as long haul travel can be. A far cry from dwelling with the masses on our Air China fight from Melbourne.
The only thing more satisfying that day than finally arriving in Greece was taking the lift to the rooftop of our hotel building ...
... Roman Agora and the Ancient (ie Greek, pre-Roman) Agora which is quite large. We visited the latter 2 years ago so didn't go inside again. We saw lots of small, cute Byzantine churches and, after much searching, found Athens Cathedral. It was not easy to find!! It's Greek Orthodox, of course, and - just our luck! - is being renovated! So, it's covered in scaffolding outside and in and we couldn't see much. We went inside and it was very dark and very ornate - ...
