... cabinets to hold her treasures. So it was with great awe that I got to view this set-up in person.

We arrived at Biggy’s house in mid-afternoon. I recognized at once the front garden from pictures she had sent me in past. Her front garden, back garden and house were a delight to tour. Her husband, Bert, came home a short while later and our gracious hosts served ...

Hengelo- history and ice-cream.

Renata left us in the centre of Hengelo around 9.30am. The main shopping area is pedestrianised, so it is nice to walk around. Dad's ghost walked round with us, nodding occasionally at some of the older buildings. I think he recognised the church but when I asked he just shrugged. "I was only four," he said.

During the war, the Dutch were starving. The cities, like Utrecht, fared worst, and many people travelled to ...

A Dip Before Bedtime

... my sleeping bag, only to hear the whine of a lone mosquito in the dark of my room. The kids had chosen to sleep together under a mosquito net, as if Overijssel was the last bastion of malaria. I pulled the hood of my sleeping bag round me, so that only my nose was showing. Half a minute later, the mosquito flew straight up my nose, causing me to writhe and snort ineffectually in my mummified, trussed state.

I don't know how the mozzie found me, but it stopped whining after that.

We then had some light refreshments and went on our way to the Memorial dedicated to the 82nd men that participated in the Waal River Crossing.

The monument is located along a long dike that sits about 30 feet higher than any ground around it or along it. We were told that the Germans used the dike as a place to man machine guns for it provided them a clear field of fire along the river when ...

We vertrouwen het niet echt als ze ons naar rechts of naar links wil hebben, en proberen constant haar te checken danwel op fouten te betrappen. Maar tot nu toe zijn wij de enigen die fouten ...

Independence from Conference Day

Happy 4th of July! Only a few hours left of my conference. It has been a productive experience. I have gotten positive feedback for my paper and some helpful comments that I will have to incorporate when I return. Plus, I have laid the ground work for a guest researcher position at the UNU in Maastricht, Netherlands maybe next summer. They are doing some Nanotechnology work and would appreciate the American perspective. The ...

Het Fietserpad, 5 days cycling through Holland

... We bought some meat ,salad and yoghurt at the supermarket and had dinner in the middle of town on the village square watching the sun go down. Day 3, LOSSER TO SCHOONEBEEK This proved a tough one. The route was nice as always but easy to get lost and offcourse that's what happened. It is not easy to follow a route from instructions by book specially without a kilometre counter that really is a must for this sort of trip. We had to go along a river, The ...
