Gruss
Ralf

Hallo zusammen,

Off again!

Day 13

And so the momentous decision has arrived: do we 'brave' Albania... or try to skip round it, on one of the abundant ferries that seem to ply this coast? Tough one. All the feedback seems to suggest that the roads are treacherous, to say the least. Happen across some Brits in Reception this very a.m. who seem to confirm this. On the other hand, seems churlish not to even try!
Had wanted to swoop down coast a bit more to ...

... Luckily, 2 Macedonian professors happened to be returning from a conference and gave us a ride into town.

They dropped us off in the center of the touristy lake town of Ohrid. A destination for Macedonian and Greek tourists mostly. Not much more than a beach resort though, it was nice to be on a coast of sorts again. We met some amazing people, one of whom we would meet up again with in Sofia, and had a relaxing few days after our "extremely hard work" in Berat.

Montenegro, Albania & Macedonia who'da thought!!!

... like a dilapidated ex communist leaders holiday camp and parked up. I jumped straight into the crystal clear water of the warm lake and the troubles at the boarder were washed away. As dusk started to draw in I noticed that the people at the lake changed and as the family's and couples left, lots of gay guys appeared... we were in gay pulling point central! I was in people watching heaven! it was great fun watching them... there was the gay porn star who walked like a ...

Ohrid: Naughty or Nice???

... stood in line and got my own bottle filled with "Holy" water. Even though I did not drink this water, I did feel like participating in this ritual. The river that went walked along is known as The Springs of the River Crni Drim. This river actually pours into Lake Ohrid. Marija and I went on a boat ride to see the springs of this river. We share this boat ride with a family of Serbians. They were making jokes and having a good time and the ...

On "Vacation"

... carvings made of solid wood, representing the life of John the Baptist. Every detail was amazing! I could describe it all I want and would not even come close to doing it justice. Now, an alter here is different than I know. Here in the churches an alter is like a wall that separates you from the monarchs or priests. It usually tells the life story of the Saint the church is named after. I was blessed enough for one of the ...

... streets, weaving around thousand year old churchs, always going upwards in an effort to reach Samuel's fortress at the top. Nearing the top, a terrible tune wafts towards me and on entering the fort, I discover its source. A man is dressed in traditional Macedonian garb and playing local bagpipes for the tourists, all six of us. The music is pretty awful, but I want a picture, so I give him the smallest bill I have and whip out my camera ...

... we didn't find it. Next day we headed for the bus station to go to see a church on our way to cross over to Albania. A cab driver offered us the same fare so we took him up on it. A cafe said we could leave our bags with them whilst we looked around. The water here was even clearer than it had been over in Ohrid. Crystal. There was a spa that you could visit too which explained the clear water. The church was Sveti Naum and is on the edge of ...
