... at times it felt as if a trailer just with spare tyres in tow would be an indispensable part of our overall equipment. So they didn’t replace this one. With what? They just tinkered with it in this arcane do-it-yourself way of African road heroes and after a while declared we were ready to resume our trip.
We could only hope it would be the last one.

It was the 24th (March) now and we had just returned to Mopti from Pays Dogon. Ali was nice enough to wait till I checked in the hotel and then took me for a small tour of Mopti. He first took me to a local fisherman whose pirogue was leaving for Kourioume (15 km from Timbuktu) the next day. The fisherman guaranteed me he will get me over to Kourioume in 3 days – i.e. we would depart the next morning (Thursday) & I would be in Timbuktu by Saturday. ...

... it pretty much suited me to get in the working gear only by degrees. I enjoyed the temperature which was still hovering only around 20°C, or even a tad below, while I could. Ibrahima kept his jacket on for it was too cool for his liking. Later on, sun would inevitably climb up and temperature would rise. That would be the part of the day for Ibrahima to come into his own, and I would start suffering. But right now it really felt good.
