... mercy. I was immediately devastated because I believed a couple of sentimental (but not valuable to anyone but me) items were in those pockets, along with my travel clock, rain jacket, swiss army knife, and a small notebook with some email addresses of fellow travelers and notes from my great cooking class in Kanchanaburi. The airport was hot, I was tired, I felt violated, and I was in a place completely unfamiliar to me after 5 weeks of traveling ...
Dakar, Senegal sarakmills... where I had the opportunity to meet with the Rotary Club of Nouakchott. I learned quite a lot about the types of projects they are working on and hope reconnect with them soon. The next day, the vast majority of the Mauritania PCVs met in Rosso for a few training sessions and preparations for Dakar. The day after that, however, is when the fun started! We boarded two busses and began the journey into ...
Dakar, Senegal mikelbtToday was another A day so I went to Global Studies and Islam class. In Global Studies we talked about art history and a woman from Zimbabwe talked about the economic crisis in her country. In Islam we discussed the history of the Quran. I then went to the gym to workout before my 1:35pm Energy class. In Energy class we talked about the first and second law of thermodynamics and then our homework on Obama's new environmental policies. Obama has ordered the ...
Dakar, Senegal claudiv... about protecting my things. Just being in 3 busloads full of foreigners, in front of the locals, did not look like a good outcome. Senegal immigration even demanded that we leave our passports with them(Luckily we had enough Americans to complain and fight) since we had no visas! Despite that stuff, the locals here are VERY nice(but maybe its cuz of the hospitality industry, I duno). They always say hi and are very hospitable. They ...
Dakar, Senegal ikono... They just lifted it right off and we went on our merry little way. It was also a little nerve racking because the windshield looked like it was going to shatter at any moment and send glass flying into our face. But somehow we made it to the bus stop without incident. Well that's about all I have time for today but I hope you were at least a little bit amused. :) Miss you all!
Dakar, Senegal lori_senegal08... on my shoulder, sucked her thumb and fell asleep. She was so incredibly sweet. If I could have gotten away with stealing her, I so would. The babies were spread out on two mats. Some were laying face up and some on their bellies, others were bouncers. I honestly do not know how to explain it better than the pictures do, or better than I could have seen it myself. It was so clean and the sisters knew exactly what they were doing. There was an incredible ...
Dakar, Senegal ejcasey... there as they dont use loo roll here in Senegal and I was in desperate need of some! Such a snob cant survive without it!!! Spent Saturday at Isle de Goree with Naomi another volunteer. Its an island where they believe that slaves were kept before being trasported to USA and Europe. Lots of history on the island so I loved it- went to the maison des esclaves and IFAN history museum. Other than that justchilled out on the beach. Im loving my ...
Dakar, Senegal rebeccavitkovit... and progressive. After the reception a larger very eclectic group of us (including SCF and Reuters and British American Tobacco folks!)went on to a Lebanese restaurant in town called Fahim's where we had wonderful "meze" and just talked and nibbled our way to about midnight ! I sat next to someone who had also been at Newcastle Univ, AND has a house backing onto Alby's primary school in York ! lots of things in common to talk about - but all several thousand miles away ! Friday ...
Dakar, Senegal nroseveare... for thirty-five hours of such abuse. It gets worse. Apparently that thirty-five hours refers to only the actual travel time, not including the interminable delays and waiting time on the tracks, nor the meal and pee-pee stops at least three times a day. The bathrooms were unspeakable, of course, so I held my own for the whole time, which only works if you don't eat much. I didn't, surviving mostly on something like rose hips ...
