Ile de Bendor Bandol, French Riviera - Cote d'Azur, Provence, France, 83150, 33-04-94-25-06-06
... figured this out and got on the right boat - well, a different boat anyhow.

Driving onto the boat we followed the sign that said ‘Embarkments’. I love how so many words in French are similar to what we use in English, but with slightly different meaning. I certainly feel as though I am embarking on something this evening. Something completely new and unplanned - even to us who hardly do ...
Marseille, Provence, France 2totangoNO MARSEILLE for us!!! The captain went by when we had 21 foot waves and winds of 50 gusting to 65. It was sunny but not good enough to dock in Marseille, so on to Barcelona we go. In spite of it, we had a great relaxing day and i had a 3 hour nap this afternoon. Naps are totally not my thing but apparently i was exhausted from our whirlwind schedule. Anyway, nothing exciting. We have seen numerous people in arm slings and just ran into a woman in a ...
Marseille, Provence, France sscaswell... I don’t know if the DNA of pizza got transferred to the Arabs from Rome and then re-introduced to French via the Jews or what, but they’ve just about got it down, plentiful and cheap. The real meal deal is three full pies for €10, but the best buy for me is a quarter pie for about a single €, depending on toppings. One or two of those will pretty much fill you up, though I’ve resolved to ...
Marseille, Provence, France hardiek... even open at that hour. But if I’d known my midnight bus would be late, I’d have chosen differently. In the meantime I make friends with a Spanish-speaking Algerian who’s a jazz fan and asks me questions about Chet Baker that I can’t answer. We pass some time in chit-chat until I finally give up the ghost and try to cop some zzzz’s, bus or not. What really worries me is all the student-age population also lined up for the ...
Marseille, Provence, France hardiek... men in their flowing robes were milling about and young Arab guys were cruising around in convertibles with the latest in dance music blasting. What was conspicuously absent though were the women.

I know there is absolutely nothing here in Marseille to draw a tourist and I am only here because of 6 Euro plane tickets but it was nevertheless a fascinating stop. Provence and the Cote d'Azur are actually where the action is ...
Marseille, Provence, France atlpilot36... at home in Paris.

This diversity is definitely a gold mine for my culinary needs but for my travel needs today I will admit I was looking for something a little more French. I will be in the Middle East soon enough and I didn't spend 6 Euros on Ryanair to get here for nothing! I figured that France had to lie just beyong the city limits and I set out to find it.

We went to the train station and on our third attempt found a ticket person who was ...
Marseille, Provence, France atlpilot36
Because of the bad weather, we missed our scheduled visit to Ile du Porquerolles and Ile du Levant. We were going to pull out the water toys and get some more time on the beach, but it didn't happen. Hopefully on my next visit to the Med, I’ll be able to see both of these islands.

Provence (Marseille), France, Catalonia, France katstravel... top of the canaille's that we photographed yesterday, this is amazing you can literally walk right off the edge of the cliffs with nothing stopping you but your common sense. 1200 feet straight down. We got back to cassis, opened the Ott rose', headed out for dinner and then watched France beat up on Ireland in rugby. Another memorable day of our journey. Since we have the car for 3 days - tomorrow we head to Aix-en-Provence.
Bandol, France esmigiel... far to walk from our car. Another place, that is highly recommended by Michelin is Chez Fonfon. But we couldn't locate the address in the small map in our guidebook. The view was spectacular from the restaurant - in the distance we could see the Notre Dame de la Garde, and all the boats in the harbor. Bouillabaisse is served in two steps - the first course is a seafood broth, served with toast (croutons), garlic, and a roux made of saffron and more ...
