LLANOS ORIENTALES - PART 2

RIO HUMADEA, GUAMAL - META We travel back from Puerto Gaitan to Villavicencio and from there we took another bus to our destination Rio Humadea; this river is totally different then the rivers in Puerto Gaitan (Manacacias river and Yucao river), the round colorful rocks, the beautiful clear water and the little fish swimming in this warm water are so special. The level of the river is low at this time of the year, walking between the rocks is fun with tennis shoes ...

Villavicencio

... its not so well known and why its not so touristy. Firstly it pretty hard to get too and its not advertised at all. OK too get too it , we would have to get a bus for 4hours and a boat for a further 4hours but the problem was they don't like Gringo,s . We would be traveling through dangerous parts of the Amazon so we were advised strongly not to go which of course we did not, As its way too dangerous , as in bye bye Brian dangerous . So that was not the best news to ...

Villavicencio

... My instructor Juanco was awesome and made the experience incredible flying like a bird over the jungle down to the plains of Colombia, once during the day and once at night on my last evening in Colombia. There couldn't have been a more magnificent way to end my trip in Colombia.

Surviving the Driving

Muggings are not common in Bogota. Sure there are a few, but as my host Lili informed me, that´s because the victims put themselves in compromising situations. It´s their own damned fault. Like the couple that tried to walk up to Cerro Monserrate the week before I arrived, an undertaking for which the Lonely Planet warns: "Take it for granted that you will be robbed along the way". And they were, well deserved. Or there was the girl that was out walking the streets of the ...

Leaving Bogota for San Agustin

Hey diddle diddle, Time to move along home, leaving tonight for San Agustin, in the south, which has some old precolumbian ruins and all that sort of thing, and as I have not seen any since Peru, should make a nice change... Other than that, Bogota has been good, lots of culture and big city stuff, another nice hostel (Hostal Sue), with lots of good DVDs and the like which can make it ...

Medellin to Bogota

Yearhs... Got to Medellin with out much real ado, but was very cold, but I was prepared for it this time and all was well. I had some religious zealot sat next to me, who wanted us to praise EL PADRE that our journey would be blessed, and other such rubbish, so I said I was tired and went to sleep, which I managed quite well. Once In Medellin I decided to head for the black sheep, even if it was a bit ...

The zoo, the savannah and my first car bomb

... collection of crazy monkeys. I don´t know, maybe it´s their carefree attitude and endless hijinks, but I think monkeys are some of the most interesting and surely the most entertaining residents in any zoo. After a few hours visiting all sections of the park we headed out to a roadside grill to get some local fare. This is cattle country and I was hankering for a nice slab of beef and some Colombian beer, which is actually quite good. The locals make this huge skewer with ...

Interesting place that Bogota

I´m not sure why I chose to come to Bogota. There´s not much here that appeals to me. Another city with museums, bars, and unspectacular sites. Regardless, I´m here and will make the most of it. Colombians seem to have a strange facination with morbid statistics. On the large electronic billboards, in the middle of the city, they have murder, suicide and child molestation rates for the year. I would later find the bus station to offer a similar slice of darkness. I found a ...

The most wonderful road in the world

There are two ways to get to Mendoza from Uspallata - the easy way and the hard way. I took the hard way, to avoid the lorries and enjoy the scenery. This entailed a climb out of Uspallata, on a gravel road, to a height of 3000m. The main problem with the gravel road was that the other side always looked smoother than the side I was on. As such, I ended up unintentionally zigzagging my way up the road. The scenery was very beautiful ...
