On To Umbria, And The Very Spiritual Assisi

... On the way to our hotel room, we stopped into a final church – the Chiesa di San Rufino – and toured its interior, as well as its exhibit on Pope John Paul II. This chiesa was unique in that it had huge glass panels built into the floor that showed more Roman ruins – as well as the remains of several ancient crypts – underneath the cathedral floor. The church nave also contained beautifully carved statues of Saints Francis and Chiara.

Not a bad place to spend the night...

We ended up in Orvieto sa we saw a friends photos of the catherdral and thought it was a must see. The cathedral was like a mini Florence Duomo, but 100% cleaner as the one in Florence is nearly black on the outside with pollution. The front facade on the cathedral is covered in beautiful gold leaf frescos that were glittering in the afternoon sunshine. Had a wander through the old town which was full of life as ...

Chocolate

... the most interesting surprize.

Perugia is surrounded by modern buildings and from the parking area there is a very modern, completely automated "minitram" connecting like a long rollercoaster, through the village below and under the mountain to the far side of Perugia. This is probably the most modern and efficient devise in all of Italy.

Arriving at the far side of Perugia, we were herded ...

... pizzeria where I had delicious lasagna. After lunch we browsed through the many stands. Sample after sample led to some major purchases. It was hard to pass up the various chocolate products when the smell just filled the air. There was everything from chocolate beer to chocolate “pills” to chocolate pasta!!

Heaven.

I’ll update you soon,

anticipation!

... br>We had a traditional dinner consisting of foods from that region. I had a pasta followed by the most sumptuous lamb. And Licia had the same. We took a stroll through the charming village and then drove back to our village for the night.

It was quite cold but with the fresh air and quiet, I got a great night's sleep.

The Green Heart of Italy

... Birthplace of st Francis) and sits on top of a hill looking very sacred. We climbed to the top where an old fortress stands and saw the sights before heading home.

We had a pretty chill time in Perugia. It is a very nice area of italy- a bit more how I pictured Italy, actually. Locals on the bus helped us to get to the hostel but we finally made it. We stayed in a really cute farmhouse with horses and ...

Chiati valley

From Lucca, we drove to the Chianti valley and stayed 2 nights in a restored ancient farmhouse, with first class amenities (except no A/C). The house site dated from 1000 AD and was a lookout point in the wars between Florence and Siena. From the farmhouse, we also visited the ancient villages to San Gimignano and Siena. We are writing you from Assisi and will leave here for Sorrento today, via Pompeii.
