Another short stop

Hallo zusammen,

Ohrid at night

Hallo zusammen,

Gruss

Well, One More Day

... the cobblestone roads to the fortress are great. The pace is slow and relaxing. There is a great path that winds in and out of the beaches on its way to a great old church. The old man giving us a tour is delighted that we are so interested and offers us Raiki (a local brandy).

After some rain, a beautiful rainbow appears.

Bitola -- a pleasant surprise!

... br>
The main attractions include some beautiful 18th and 19th century baroque architecture buildings, a noteable Catholic Church, several impressive mosques, and a clock tower and fountains in the main square. There is also an old Turkish-style bazaar through which we wandered and ended up chatting with a Macedonian family who are now living in the US (visiting Bitola on vacation). Strangely enough, they currently live in ...

A visit to Macedonia's second city

... and a few shocking eyesores) along ulica Marsal Tito, peeking into the local mosques and winding through the small streets of the bazaar. My lunch of pizza and a shopska salad was quite tasty, and the weather, if pretty toasty still, was clear and pretty close to ideal for sightseeing. There was even a new local tourist office with friendly staff handing out free town maps that let me use their toilet sans charge (a rarity in this part of Europe . . . or wait ...

Lake of Sharks

... at a time shortly after the Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453. Many talented painters who painted there were unemployed, and many of them came to the Balkans, some to Ohrid. At the same time, the Orthodox church was not at its strongest and church dogma in the provinces was not being rigourously enforced. The result was that the people who painted Sveti Maria painted what they wanted to paint. The passion of the Christ adorns the walls, but so does the life story of St ...

A Monk and his 4 x 4 Lada

... wall painted white, and the quaint little monastery building that we saw from below is the size of a barn. We reached it minutes before sunset. We met a fellow named Goran who showed us a room as as simple as it gets. There were six iron cots with blankets, and a ceiling light overhead. Apart from that, there were four little windows and the walls were white plaster. Two other people were preparing a meal in the kitchen and they invited us to have some of it. Afterwards ...

Beautiful Lake Ohrid

... people but they were on package holidays. God only knows why !!!!! But they were no help I cried myself to sleep that night. It was like a death in the family I awoke and went everywhere again. Hoping that my LP would call out, or even stagger towards me after a big night out. But it did happen. I started to accept that I would never see my best friend again. So we walked up to the fort, to take a look at it and to console myself. Actually, the fort was really enjoyable. We were ...
