    ... canal which reminded us so much of the Norfolk Broads with some boats moored into the reeds for a lunch stop. We continued passing through a free flow locks with its lights stuck on red (there was no VHF or phone number for contact on our chart).     ... It was exactly as expected: a seaside resort hotel. A nice room and we will see what dinner brings.

    Our first weekend in Gent was cut short when our friend Saskia suggested a spur of the moment trip to the beach near Vlissingen, Netherlands. So late Saturday evening the three of us hopped on a train to Antwerp and connected to the cute town of Essen where Saskia lives, which is only 10 minutes from the Netherlands and only an hour from the sunny shore of the North Sea.
