    ... It was exactly as expected: a seaside resort hotel. A nice room and we will see what dinner brings.
    -we walked into the quaint city square and found a yummy Chinese restaurant with a very friendly English speaking hostess. We were very happy. Home with leftovers and some deep sleep.

    ... set around a tree-filled green square of grass. This is an old convent, built in the 13th century. Further up the canal, we bumped into a couple of churches, right opposite to each other. And just up the road was the huge St Salvador Cathedral. Weaving back and forth over the bridges, we ended up in the Hof Arents gardens.     ... we did loads more walking. We found the old hospital and we found a fountain and we found some very overpriced cafes and we found a beautiful church and we found that by now we were really hungry.

    We had dinner in a little place not far from the old Palace, it was nice food and we even had ice cream for dessert. We were invited to join a larger party but we declined, partly because they were overbearingly rude to the waiter but mostly because we didn't want to.

    ... pub (1515) in Brugges. So we went. We sat oustide, Andrea had a belgian bier and we played Rummingking. Andrea won. The pub was closing so Pete asked where we could find the best frites and moules (mussels). Following the bar mans recommendation we went back to St Simonsplein and shared some mussels. Ma shiss osso oyo. With a full stomach and tired legs we headed back to the hostel.

    A day at the beach

    Our first weekend in Gent was cut short when our friend Saskia suggested a spur of the moment trip to the beach near Vlissingen, Netherlands. So late Saturday evening the three of us hopped on a train to Antwerp and connected to the cute town of Essen where Saskia lives, which is only 10 minutes from the Netherlands and only an hour from the sunny shore of the North Sea.
