... diverse people live in harmony... at least we try to.
The Netherlands Youth and The Seaforth Highlanders are a no show. No mention is made as to why but I suspect that summer holidays make getting people out to organized functions difficult here just as they do at home. We meet a few families on vacation. Parents are bringing their children here to remember the sacrifice of Canadians- their Liberators. It seems "the torch" of remembrance continues to be passed here.
... Landschoot told us that she returned many years later (from her new home in Switzerland) and admitted to him, "I killed 1700 Canadian boys." That is a heavy burden to bear, but evidence of how evil can distort the minds of people... especially young people who are so idealistic, impressionable and determined to make their mark in the world. When we get to Adegem Cemetery we see the graves are all Canadians. The Algonquin Regiment as well as The Lincoln and ...
Oosterbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands vanruym.133Renata left us in the centre of Hengelo around 9.30am. The main shopping area is pedestrianised, so it is nice to walk around. Dad's ghost walked round with us, nodding occasionally at some of the older buildings. I think he recognised the church but when I asked he just shrugged. "I was only four," he said.
During the war, the Dutch were starving. The cities, like Utrecht, fared worst, and many people travelled to ...
... my sleeping bag, only to hear the whine of a lone mosquito in the dark of my room. The kids had chosen to sleep together under a mosquito net, as if Overijssel was the last bastion of malaria. I pulled the hood of my sleeping bag round me, so that only my nose was showing. Half a minute later, the mosquito flew straight up my nose, causing me to writhe and snort ineffectually in my mummified, trussed state.
I don't know how the mozzie found me, but it stopped whining after that.
This is a great place to stay while exploring this area! It is a Family-Run effort, and Jeffrey and Nathasja work far too hard... I found the help and encouragement they offered me in my explorations to be far beyond any possible repayment. Located in the Center of this elegant town, the Hotel is just down the hill from the lovely St ...
Zeddam, Gelderland, Netherlands lawndartThis is Zwolle, my new home. I wanted to share a few pictures of the town with you guys and show you how pretty it is. The city is beautiful- plenty of good architecture and flowers everywhere. I love the brickwork on some of these buildings.

Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherlands felicityseeker... the one class I was really dreading, I arrived in class and fell in love with it. There are three professors for twenty students. The odds of doing well are quite low, but I am excited for the challenge. They told us that 40% of the students in my class would drop by the end of week 2 and of the remaining 60% only half of those students would understand and succeed in the class. The class is based on asking questions. They don't force feed us ideas ...
Auckland, Netherlands seawellk... a bowl of water for Sinta's horse. Thijs and Barbara told us that bad children go back to Spain with Sinta. Christmas has becoming increasing important to people in the Netherlands, but they do not exchange gifts. Rather, the day is spent visiting with family and friends. Perhaps we could learn something from the Dutch about simplifying Christmas . . . .
Amsterdam, Netherlands kimandmartin... This is definitely not the type of outing we're used to in America! LEIDEN Last Sunday we spent a lovely afternoon in Leiden, which is a town southwest of Amsterdam. We met another American, Steve, who was interested in one of Chris' watches and he took us out on his boat for a canal tour of Leiden. It was quite nice -- peaceful and brisk. Leiden is interesting for Americans because the pilgrims stopped there on their way to ...
