We made it to Sorrento!

May 12 We ended up having dinner on our last night in the Cinque Terre at a restaurant that was written up in the Rick Steeves Travel Guide, and it was also recommended by Andrea at our hotel. The thing that made it unique was that it was located right under the train tracks in the old town, so every time a train went by the building shuddered and shook and conversation stopped for a few seconds. The first time it happened, I wasn't expecting it and thought it was an earthquake! We chatted wi...

Sorrento - Summer 2002

I travelled throughout Italy with my mother and stepfather in Summer 2002. We travelled with ABC Tours, which arranged our transportation, several guided tours as well as some of our meals. Our second stop was Sorrento, near Naples and the Amalfi Coast. The highlights of our trip were Pompeii and Capri.

Magical Amalfi

What a drive. After about 6hours of flying down the highway we finally reach Sorrento the town just north of the Amalfi Coast. It is now 6pm and we have nowhere to stay. Oh forgot to mention that it is 6pm on Sunday and the entire South of Italy is leaving the Amalfi to head home from the weekend. You would think this wouldn't effect us since we are heading in but all the roads are so narrow and the crazy *******s on Vespers don't believe in keeping to one side of the road. The come right at ...

We spent one week from 21st May 2004 at this Hotel and found it to be first class. The waiters and other staff were all most friendly and could not do enough to please everyone. The food was excellent. Would definitely make a return visit.

What a brilliant base for a holiday!

Just come back from staying for a week, wow!! You won't need to eat out!! Food superb, excellent choice and quality.Waiting staff all brilliant, nothing too much trouble! Stayed half board but also bought few lunches all typical italian dishes and quality of fresh produce evident in flavour. Rooms on 1st and 2nd floors have been modernised so if you get a room 3rd floor or above, ask for a change for benefit of electric shutters, better views and nicer bathroom.Swimming pool area lovely and secluded and quiet. Rooms immaculately clean. Drinks expensive but good bar round corner from hotel to right, food good here too! Definitely would recommend hotel, wish we'd stay 2 weeks but would've put a stone on in weight!!!! - Enjoy!!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel

from Ellichelle
Stayed at this hotel in August 2003 for two weeks. Had a fabulous time in Sorrento. Our room was on the top floor and we had a sizeable portion of the roof for our own private terrace with fab views across the bay looking towards Vesuvius. The food was some of the best I've ever had and the friendly staff contributed to a great dining experience. Brilliant location - cannot fault the hotel at all and will definitely return. There was just so much to see. We did the two day Rome excursion and definitely recommend it -excellent value for money. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Amalfi coast and Capri - all brilliant places to visit. Only one drawback - the heat! Unusually hot & humid. Read some dodgy reviews prior to travelling but can't understand how anyone could call this hotel - I think there must be some people who are never happy/satisfied. Enjoy your holiday!

Just returned after the most wonderful week spent at the Grand Hotel de la Ville in Sorrento. What a fabulous hotel and the staff were superb - charming, friendly, helpful and good looking too!! The location was good too as via Rota is fairly quiet and not too far from the Corso Italia. The food was superb. We had intended to have dinner out some evenings but we chose not to as the food was great. Our rooms enjoyed the most fantastic view over the Bay of Naples and what sizeable balconies we had (rooms 529 and 530). Thank you to all at the de la Ville for a fab week!

Excellent

Fantastic hotel, friendly staff (especially Enzo - the main man) with some great local cooking and a hideaway pool to lounge about in as a break from the culture. Wonderful views of Vesuvius and Bay of Naples from the roof terrace and 2 minutes into the middle of Sorrento by foot where you can mooch around the little shops, get some great food, or catch the ferries to Capri or Ischia or the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii. Thoroughly recommended.

Great situation

I can echo the sentiments already expressed. It is so handy to the centre of resort. The head waiter Enzio is a one-off and goes down particularly well with the ladies. The barman spoke excellent English and had a wealth of amusing stories. Despite lack of a sea view from the rooms, we enjoyed our holiday and would " Ritorno a Surriento" as soon as possible

Loved the Grand De La Ville

from Margaret_Glen
We stayed in the Grand De La Ville in July 2003. This hotel was excellent. The Staff could not do enough for you, especially the Restaurant Staff. They were all extremely friendly and it was nice to have a laugh with them. The food was excellent and plenty of it. We were usually full when we left the Restaurant as the portions were larger than we have normally found in the Italian Lakes. Breakfast could be taken on the Terrace which we tended to do every morning except when we were going on a trip. We then had to eat in the Dining Room which was open earlier than the designated time for breakfast. The Hotel is in an excellent position a short distance from the main square but in a quiet residential location (except for the cockeral which woke me every morning). We had a view of the bay from our room and truly enjoyed sitting on the balcony having a drink and crips from the well stocked mini bar in the room. It was great to come in from the scorching the scorching heat outside to the coolness of the air conditioning. There was often entertainment on the roof terrace at night. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. If we wrnt back to Sorrecnto we would certainly stay there. As for Sorrento itself, I do prefer the Italian Lakes but that is just a personal choice.
