We were able to exit the train twice inside the mountain to take a look out the viewing holes cut in the side of the mountain (like the windows walk at Karangahake but on a bigger scale!). The 9km tunnel took 16 years to build and was completed in 1912.

After my only night as the minority in the hostel, I woke up and dashed to the train station to catch the 10am train. I'm starting to accumulate more things like souvenirs and food but I don't have room for it and it weighs me down! My total pack probably weighs 25 pounds and it is not fun to carry. Today we enjoyed the wonderful scenery of the valley and mountains where we are staying. We used the Skyline cable cars to go up from Stechelberg to Schiltorn via Gimmelwald, then Murren and Birg stations. The trip up took about half an hour. At the top of Schiltorn there is a restaurant that revolves to give 360 degrees views. Unfortunately it was rather cloudy so we could not see any of the three main peaks: Jungfrau, Monch and ...

... was trying to encourage the day trippers to lean into the skii as they went down the slope - the girls were better, braver than the boys. I had been standing on the side of the run and as one young fella headed towards me I moved out of the way and waved in apology to the instructor who then headed over. I thought I was in for a good Swiss tongue lashing but No! Out of his mouth came this Aussie accent. He was from Melbourne and came over to say hello. How did he know? We had a bit of ...
