    ... remarkable woman and she transformed the business into a huge success at a time when women didn't get involved in such ventures. She was also a patron of the arts and she had a priceless art collection which she bequeathed to local museums after her death.

    The pictures on display of Madame Pommery show a very stern, unsmiling woman but apparently she enjoyed life to the full.

H.M.Martel was smaller and used more modern techniques such as riddling machines, their tour explained the champagne making process a bit more and also had some old machines on display, we were the only ones on the tour so it was a little awkward but still enjoyable.     ... size, most things were last year’s and I know that I shop best in the company of others.

    However, we did find Wertheim! It sits on the confluence of the Tauber and Maine Rivers and at the time of our visit, the annual festival of music was in full swing. Another late night of German beer and dancing! Good fun, hopefully to be repeated next year. The parking area was across the river, so was reasonably quiet … the time the music actually stopped ...
