Back to the Alsace

Many of you reading this blog may not be aware that when I lived and worked in the UK for Mars I visited Strasbourg often as it was the location of our other major European office. I was returning this time to meet up with an ex-colleague who himself had left Mars and was now living in the US. He happened to be there at the time for a christening so we arranged to meet up. I arrived the day before we were due to meet and re-acquainted myself with the city. Having visited it, 'for work', so ma...

Surprise reunion

I started the week in Geneva because of work. During my weekly Skype call with my parents, they mentioned my brother would be leaving for Paris the next morning. Nice of him to tell me! I called him but couldn't get a hold of him, so tried again in the morning. By the time I was awake on Monday, he was in bed for the night, but luckily he woke up and answered the phone. He told me he had a free day on Wednesday with no plans so this would be a good day for us to ...

A Brief Stop in Alsace

... Strasbourg when he invented the printing press around 1440, and this invention led to the Gutenberg Bible, which is one of the first books ever printed.

The famous cathedral in Strasbourg is massive and impressive for its size alone. Add in the fact that it survived so many wars, and its pinkish façade seems even more impressive. We walked around inside and out and saw the enormous astronomical clock that was built in the 1500s while chomping ...

... and got lost trying to find others. Our feet were tired and our minds were overflowing with information. The Zevisit audiotours were interesting and informative, but we all agreed two in one day was too many. We decided to take a tram back to the centre and browsed in a few shops on our way back to the car. Then we spotted an ice cream cafe and decided it would be nice to sit and relax with a deliciously decadent ice cream dessert.

Spent 3 nights in France

... about halfway up at an old church and decided to stay there and "check it out" while we headed upward. After another 30 min or so we made it to the top - ruins from 12th and 13th centuries!! Yesterday, Fri, we all walked into town and through historic Strasbourg and the old tanners part of town.. Finally took the boatride around and through town, did ...

A nice detour

We caught the wrong train and wound up in Gengenbach. While we were waiting for a train back we met a lady who told us the town had a beautiful old-town section. So we went discovering again. After a good look around we stopped at a pub while we were waiting for the next train and got talking to the owner. Turns out he'd been to Australia on holiday, so we had a good time talking to him until it was time to go.

... got a salami sandwich, an ice cream cone, and some peanuts. We hung out there and ate, then we got back on the road. We got stuck in traffic, so the trip took much longer than the two and half hours planned. We then arrived at a Hotel Ibis (a chain here in Europe), but turns our we were at the wrong one in Strasbourg. The bus then started joking how we really didn't have reservations and that we'd ...

The first course was fish, grilled zucchini, potatoes roasted in a tomato sauce, and feta cheese (Yum!), the second course chicken and pineapples, the third course was sausage, fourth course was chicken wings.
