Arçais, Poitou-Charentes, France carivergaAnother beautiful day of cycling. Not quite sure what I’ll do when the weather changes, I’ve been so spoiled with beautifully sunny days each and every day.
Cycled through quite a few ‘petit cite du character’ today. Tiny little villages with fabulous old churches or other buildings. Narrow streets with what seems to not be a soul about. Until the noon day bells start to chime ...
... I didn't photograph all the things I cooked, but in some cases I needed to remember how we put the meal together on the plate so I tooks some pics to make it easier to replicate these dishes in future. Nerdy I know, but you will thank me if you come round for dinner one night and the food looks really pretty!

... guests not wishing to do the cookery school. Anway, David, who runs the cooking classes, picked me up from the train and as soon as we pulled in I knew it was going to be a lovely week! My accommodation was somewhat classier than the hostels Id been staying at (double bed, ensuite, crisp white linen, lost of cupboards and mirrors, just the way I liked it).
I started each day by sauntering down to the dining room where there was museli and beautiful stewed ...
... the D-Day landings are buried. I found it more moving than I'd expected actually, as the scale and number of cemeteries like this is a bit overwhelming. It was great to see the cemetery so well maintained though, and despite the nature of the place it was encouraging to see how strongly the locals felt about maintaining these cemeteries. Feelling suitably downbeat, we set off for Mont St Michel. The weather was still a bit dreich, and that didnt change ...
La Rochelle, Poitou-Charentes, France cal_raeThis was
another disaster journey really. We started late after an extended chat with a couple from Ireland and set off under the command of TomTom taking a left out of the car park to our destination 40km away.
After two hundred metres TomTom found its feet and continued its reboot problem and we had resort to using GoogleMapping again. As GoogleMaps does not re-route we had to follow its directions to the letter.
Dutifully, and as ...
... that have paid extra for an upgraded breakfast, can't complain. Oh what a jolly day! I've exhausted my supply of beechams capsules and feel a bit rough, but not to be put off I set off for the centre of La Rochelle, it's quite a walk and I maintain the stiff breeze coming of the Atlantic and a bit of exercise will do me good. How right I was. I really am feeling triumphant today, my French is rubbish, I ...
La Rochelle, France laineebee... I think I understood a fair bit, actually, which was great, as I have been having nightmares that I go home from France and, oops, I didn't actually learn any French at all. So, it was quite relief to feel like I was actually doing something that could help my French. The guy sitting across from me, who was, what?, 60 odd?, was making origami out of a sheet of music. He folded it ...
La Rochelle, France french_rhubarb... potatoes and delicious fish, and a beetroot entre thing and a bread roll and a desert, which was like coconut custard. Wow. And they have a choice of things. Those were just what I chose. Then Amy and I wandered in to the Old Port to buy the books we need to read for our class (yes, reading french books). There are a lot to read, so we each bought 4 of the 5 compulsory texts (we'll buy the other later - 4 books will ...
La Rochelle, France french_rhubarb... and all mine to discover. Taking risks and taking calculated risks was a consideration that I had pondered upon but being an "old" foreign female travelling on her own as a true backpacker/camper did not mean that I had to behave carelessly. I zigzaged my way south ; if I decided on camping it would always be on a camp site. Their quality varied from a fully equipped field to a couple of electrical posts at the back of an all in one petrol station ...
