... roads are not as good as our major freeways yet they put us to sleep at 100 Kms per hour. We arrived at Chur just after 3pm and found our hotel. It is a cute little city and is actually the oldest town in Switzerland. Had the best hot chocolate in the loveliest chocolate shop. We went up Piz Nair, which os 3057m, to get there we went on two funicular trips and a cable car. The view was great, from the top it was a 360* view and down to St Moritz. ... Its claim to fame is that it was once the gateway to Europe from the south. There are three castles there. We did a walking tour of the town and went through the largest castle. It was joined to the wall around the city, most of which is still there. It is world heritage listed. At the end of the tour we were given a bottle of white merlot, not sure why, happy all the same. ... just for the food, but for the view of the (much smaller here) Rhine valley with Liechtenstein on one side and Switzerland on the the other, the view of the castle, the service, and in particular a sommelier who spent a lot more time with me discussing the paired wines than a solo diner normally merits.
