For our time in Solo we had planned a tour through the countryside and a village called Bekohang, with visits to local artisanal factories. Most of the group was going to ride a bike, but a few of us opted a horse carriage.

... of the construction each temple was intended for a family, the central temples for the Royal family, the smaller for the rest of the families in the area.
The temples were abandoned probably around the 10th Century and at some point destroyed by an erthquake, and while the locals knew of the site (and they used stones from the complex as building materials for their houses) they didn't know the origin of the site, which created the legend of the 1000 temples.
