Zoo & a bit of history

Matt and I headed off to the Koelner Zoo on the metro. It was lovely: very green, glass exclosures. There was a big family of elephants (about 16), 3 hippos who were having fun in the water and making loud noises and showing off their large teeth. Matt loved the orangatangs (the babies were playing) and the cheetahs (who were prowling up and down). A flock of flaming pink flamingo's and long legged ducks.

... forest and the picnic tables and chairs were still damp from dew at midday. So we had our picnic on a covered bench on the boardwalk that was setup with interactive displays for people to learn about the forest. Needless to say there were lot's of passers by but only one older lady who was delighted to see us having a picnic and bottle of red wine (with colourful plastic cups). She said something in rapid German and was able to understand my feeble attempt to tell her I can ...

    Kommern market and LVR Freilichtmuseum

Kommern is a small town quite close to our accommodation and by chance they had a handicraft market and fair on Sunday. We started and ended our day at the market. When we arrived at 10am many of the stall holders were just setting up. Lot's of handicrafts, rope making, wood carving, black smith and medieval costumes. As we also wanted to visit the museum nearby we left the market but decided to return before they closed at 6pm so we could have bratwurst and beet for dinner - ...

... F1' skiing (if you can believe the sign, and gambling, with a casino as the town's centrepiece. It was bitterly cold walking around and we couldn't find a nice cafe so we retreated (or advanced) to the local airfield, which dispensed the coffee but was otherwise soulless. With the campsite (€18) just a mile back towards the town, we spent the rest of ...

Day 40 - Koblenz to Hammer

Noah here! Rain for 40 days and 40 nights and we're still afloat. Slight exaggeration, but we've had our share, and I'm writing this to the patter of raindrops on the roof. And we had plenty more overnight in Koblenz. As planned we made visits to several Aldi/Lidl shops, and we're now awash with wine. Low centre of gravity though so we shouldn't capsize. Today was blissfully free of road closures in spite of a cross-country rural route that avoided motorways ...
