After getting the call to "Go North", we headed off from Milan's oppressive heat and we thought that it might be a bit cooler if we put a few degrees of latitude under our belts...

Today was a relatively short ride down from Brianšon, up and over Col d'Izoard and then a long gentle valley road to Guillestre.

... descended another few hundred metres and found a hotel/restaurant, which offered us another chance to get warm. We bought some hot soup - the waitress even offered us dressing gowns to put over our wet clothes to keep warm! They were obviously prepared for nutcases like us!

By now wearing several layers, and with our buffs under our helmets, we started our descent again and eventually left the rain behind. Luckily the road became a tandem-friendly long, straight -1% ...

... got better as we left behind the cloud cover on the top of the mountain, and the sun brought welcome relief from the freezing cold.

Once past the twisty bits, there is a long straight slightly undulating stretch that is perfect for tandems, and we were able to settle into a comfortable 35 kph and enjoy the scenery.

We stopped for a mint tea in Bessans, and then carried on the D902 then D1006 along the valley towards Termignon. ...
