Togothon day 1, part II

... and be in bed by the time the sun went down (resting up our bodies for another long trek the next day).

Our hotel had a restaurant where the options were chicken, fish, and french fries. The price being roughly 10 cedi. We only brought 70 cedi worth of money each, so we knew we couldn't afford this and awkwardly left the restaurant after having discussed the "menu" and talked to the woman who worked there.

We went out to the road and found a little stand selling soap ...

En route to the border

... in Aflao (the city on the Ghana side of Lome) until midnight.

honestly, the way our arrival in Aflao went, I was getting really worried about how the remainder of our trip would go. When we got out of the tro-tro, the driver still owed us change from our ticket so we stood around waiting. As we stood, we were swarmed by men who had been waiting at the station---there is no uniform for drivers, so we didn't know whether these men were beggars ...

Homes, Sweet Homes

... I was literally the last person to board the plane. However, the rushed departure from Dagbamete did take my help to take my mind off of the fact that I finally had to leave the village.

Now, you may have wondered why I chose the title ‘Homes, Sweet Homes’. During my trip, I realized that Ghana has become my second home; and, as with any home, I will certainly be going back. I felt welcome everywhere I went, and everyone that I met treated me like I was ...

My New Home

... 8pm. There was a lot of traditional music featured in the ceremony (I even got to play for a little while). The part of the service that will always stick out for me is the animal sacrifices. About 100 chickens, and 20 goats, were sacrificed throughout the day for various religious purposes (joining the church, confessing sins, asking the Gods for something, etc.). While it would take a very long time to accurately describe this full day at the shrine ...

Aug 1 Day 32 Lome, Togo

... designs and detail. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures in the museum.

We visited the market and boy were they happy to see us. We had three Africans with us and yet we were surrounded by vendors all trying to sell us their wares. We have become fairly experienced buyers and we both enjoy bartering and haggling to a point. We kind of play good cop, bad cop. Dave is Ann ...

The Story of the Brother (and the Cousin)

... m living with came back from Ghana where she’s at uni. Yes, this means she speaks English and thus adopted me to practice on. She took me to her cousin’s house. The cousin, Yawo, was nice enough and said he wanted to meet up with me that weekend. I figured, it’d be ok, since he’s 'family’ and all, so agreed. It was alright, we just wondered around and had a coke in a little café. Then he started asking me bizarre questions. It was ...

A little disclaimer

... ago.

It's just that the good work they do – visiting HIV patients and social cases, holding 'accueil écoute’ sessions and groupes de paroles for disadvantaged kids, giving out condoms and advice (I’m not sure of the quality of advice...) – it all seems to be secondary to all the admin and arguing and being so pernickety about every tiny little detail, and that’s.. the wrong way round.

Hospitals

... face.

The hospital is... not a nice place to be. It looks more like our PE changing rooms at school than it does a hospital - the same lino designed to hide the dirt, the same used-to-be-white tiles... fine for a school (though even that has been demolished and replaced now) but not for a hospital.

Armand was laughing because I apparently looked terrified all day. I told him it was very different ...

So Many Drums!!!

... another event in another town. I recognized a lot of the drummers, though. Faisal was there. I recognized some of the dancers from the funeral in Anyako. One of the new guests staying with Uncle Sulley got up and danced. I was very impressed. He did a great job. We played for a couple of hours (they had already been playing for at least an hour) Then the call to prayer came, so we had to stop. We were so pumped, though. We didn’t want to stop playing. Faisal and ...

Experiencing Anyako

... him permission to walk to the island. So we went onto his compound. We had to take our shoes off (even though there’s no “floor,” it’s all dirt). We sat down and Seshie asked one of the guys to let the healer know we were there. The healer (I can’t remember his name) came out and greeted us. He was very kind. We introduced ourselves to him, and he asked us a little bit about our trip to Ghana. I was surprised at how young he was. I was ...
