Panama and Parting Thoughts

A travel blog entry by josephandjoel

$32 dollars bought a ticket on a 'direct' shuttle and boat to Bocas del Toro, the remote island paradise in the north western corner of Panama. The shuttle was an old van filled to capacity and basically dumped us at the border in Sixola. We were swiftly exited from Costa Rica and made to walk across the river via a rather old railway bridge. The …

Das Miami Zentralamerikas!

A travel blog entry by seeyou2011

Canal Lore

A travel blog entry by bobnkaren

We took an English speaking city tour today that included being hauled out to the Miraflores Locks to the Canal museum and dumped out by our surly non-communicative guide. We were totally unimpressed with her, but loved the museum and took a bunch of pictures trying to embed all that information in our feeble brains. There's so much to remember the …

My Canal Tops Your Canal

A travel blog entry by bobnkaren

We met another wonderful couple from Canada today Heather and Phil---they're almost as wonderful as you! They're from Saskachawan and were on the Canal tour with us and 100 of our closest friends.

We did what's called a partial transit--took a bus to Gamboa where we boarded our boat in the canal, then rode down through two locks to the …

It's Like Being Your Own Lawyer

A travel blog entry by bobnkaren

Isabel would never have let this happen.

We'd planned to spend three days in Panama City, take the Canal train to Colon on the Caribbean side, then a bus to Portabelo where we'd stay for 2 days, then return to PC to catch the flight back to Costa Rica on the 13th.

We had NOT planned on a holiday. Panama really knows how to …

    Nice, neat hotel

Costa Inn is a nice little hotel. Its cheap so the rooms are basic but have airconditioning. The roof top pool is a lifesaver on hot days. Breakfast is standard but overall the hotel is extremely good value.
Note: There are very few restaurants around within walking distance so be prepared to eat at the hotel a lot!

    Good price and value

A pool on the roof and breakfast included? Such a deal for $66 in Feb 2012. The only drawback was the smell of mothballs in the room, and later in our clothes. Hey, at least there weren't any moths!

    Unfriendly Staff

We stayed in Costa Inn for 4 nights! The price was OK for beeing a Hotel in the center of the city but the staff was really unfriendly. If you let your clothes wash, make sure to pay it straight away. We have been charged 100 Dollars for 2 little bags of clothes!
Something else: don't book the City Sightseeing tour through the hotel. The Guide hardly speaks English and the hole thing is more of a taxi drive then a tour, so you can easily arrange it by yourself!

    Great little hotel, super people

We loved the hotel and the people, even the restaurant was good. The place is dated but clean and each room has a phone, tv w/movie channels and US channels, and a window air conditioner. The rooftop pool and deck have a lovely view of the mountains and the city.
Breakfast is quite substantial with several hot dishes including chicken drummies, scrambled eggs w/onions and peppers, sausages; coffee cakes, pastries, breads, yogurt, fruit, coffee, tea.
The staff was so wonderful. We had booked a city tour w/the travel agency connected to the hotel and were unhappy with it, as they promised an English guide, but our guide as it turned out, spoke about 3 words in English and refused to say any more. the management actually refunded half of the tour cost, then later decreased the price for our room for the next 3 days because a holiday had interrupted our plans for a visit to Colon. They couldn't have been nicer.
