... chunk of South America in gold.
We got a shock on the bus trip from Madrid to León. Just dozing of in the sun when "Wham, bam!" and the coach lurched and swayed from side to side. Juancarlos our tour guide swears the driver doesn't drink but I think he must have had a micro-siesta to scrape a roadside barrier on such a straight stretch.
Great to see Bernadette that afternoon looking so taut, trim(mer), and terrific. Her knee is ...

... to the 11th century, but most is in the 15th and 16th century. There is a section that is still used by a religious community but for the most part it is either Hotel, Museum, conference/university use or the church which is still consecrated for that purpose and holds the relics of Saint Isadore. Because of that, the church remains open 24/7 for the purposes of personal prayer. No tourist activities and no weddings are held there. As the photos attest, it is an ...

... 7 kms of the Camino today was devoid of any village or amenities until we reached the town of Reliegos, only 6.1 km from Mansilla de las Mulas. Apparently the name of Mansilla de las Mulas derives from "mano en silla" meaning "hand on the saddle" and "de las mulas" meaning "of the mules". The town was previously a prominent town as a livestock market. At Reliegos we stop for a rest and something to eat and shortly we are joined by Sharron and then ...

... with someone who actually lives there. We also broke our distance record today and by the end of the walk we were pretty buggered. Boy do your legs and feet hurt after a big hike and all you want to do is sit down and stare at the wall. Even though it was the farthest walk we still got to Mansilla by 12:30pm, probably because Errin and I are so tall we walk at a brisk pace, even with stops for coffee and hot chocolate. I think we overtook the same people four times on ...

Chocolate Capitol of Spain

A gentle dawdling 17km stroll into Astorga - the chocolate capital of Spain. The mountains get closer, yet it's a couple of more days before we hit them, and it was breathtaking coming over a hill and the big mother was right there at the crest. Lovely stroll on dirt roads through forest and 'weed' fields. The weed paddocks are full of poppies, daisies, lupins and on and on it goes of flowers we spent a bucket of money on and a bucket of time ...
