... was not to be. A wander around the old town and its tiny Jewish ghetto - there was a population of around 400 Jews living here in the 16th century after all were banned from Rome by Pope Pius IV. Some of the best Etruscans ruins from 6BC were in the area so we hiked out of town to check them out. Mostly they consisted of carved out roads through the forested hills. There was also an ancient fountain. Not too exciting to look at but the walk itslelf was very nice :)
Pitigliano, Tuscany, Italy darrenhough74Last night we had just made a new itinerary to include a visit to a National Park on the coast, but that was all thrown out the window as we received a text message from Kim's mum saying she wanted to come and join us. Kim was ecstatic!!! Another replan session as we did our much overdue laundry in Grosetto and our trip of Italy was to come to an end sooner that we thought as we had to get to Barcelona in 1 week. It worked out better this way as Kim's mum flies home on the 15th Dec ...
Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy darrenhough74... visited, it has managed to prevent overbuilding of either hotels or homes. It reeks, if anything, of old money. The Queen of the Netherlands has her summer villa here, as does the oil heiress and jewellery designer Elsa Peretti. In other words, those who have
everything can't get enough of the place.

... Diocesi there is crammed with valuable Etruscan finds.
At Sovana, which completes this triangle of fascinating historic towns, we find tombs from the 7th century BC, the earliest period of Etruscan civilisation. The town became pivotal in the period of the Etruscan civilisation’s greatest splendour and again became important in the Middle Ages as is evident from the quality of its medieval buildings. The 11th century Duomo is an exceptional example of ...

There were African people selling their wares up and down the beach, dresses, beads and lava lavas. One woman had her baby strapped to her back, carrying dresses, a basket on her head filled with beads and a sign showing that she did cornrows. The rich Italian woman had Thai nannies with them.
After 8 hours we were done. We hopped the bus to Porto E’cole, the neighboring port for a look around and a ...

Punta Ala, Italy jpsaby... a fire. We gathered the few available candles. My next call did not go through. We had pretty much resigned ourselves to a night (at least) without power, when Giulia showed up at the gate with another woman. After an hour or so of fooling around with the circuit box, lights were restored. The kids returned with brown crushed-olive warpaint all over their faces and demanded dinner. We never did get to Pisa.
Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Italy oneyearaway... every cruise and I am in the bad habit of waiting until the last minute before joining the hoards of passengers on the deck. Basically, everyone stands around in bright orange lifejackets on the upper deck waiting for the loud beeps. Sus and I used this time to check if there were any cute guys onboard. Hum....looked like lots and lots of older couples. A couple honeymooners and a few kids but no real talent to speak of. Then we noticed that there were a few guys that looked about our ...
