... so soon we were back out on the local roads making our way to the north and a couple of areas marked as natural preserves / national parks where we hoped we might find some sand for the boys. Instead we found ourselves on a road with two-way traffic and cars parked solidly on the right that went straight into a beach without the benefit of a place to turn around. I had the min-bus all the way to the end of that road before realizing that it ...

We packed up and headed out on a shorter drive this morning - this time the end destination is the Adriatic coast, but first Laura found a castle that hits all the right notes in the guidebook so we are going to stop there on the way. ... heavily fortified. I can imagine a maze of tunnels and passageways in the caves behind the castle. It would have been difficult for any enemy to invade the place.

The next stop was the Skocjan Caves. Although it is not as famous as the Postojna Caves, reviews from the internet claims that the Skocjan Caves were less touristy and were in fact a better option to see. I was not disappointed. The ...

    Leaving Venice

A travel blog entry by sr_trip_2015 on Jun 05, 2015

Our ship was moored at the smaller of two passenger vessel terminals. I had the sense that it once was the terminal for steerage passengers from England starting the eastern leg of the "Grand Tour." It was a cavernous building with dark, unlit and presumably unused corners. Portions were "cooled" by post-WW2 ceiling fans, except in the security area. There was no cooling in that area. The security personnel ...
