... marker has a wrought iron cross rather than gravestone, and in front of the marker is fresh soil with fresh flowers. Many folks were milling about the cemetery, most in traditional German clothing. We took a seat in the huge church; it was gorgeous inside-- very cathedral like. It kept filling up, then before we knew it, the band from last night (marching through the town at 11pm, 1am etc) played outside the church. After their songs, they paraded into church ...

... off a few things at our bunks, and then walked up to the ridge behind the Rifugio. The views were spectacular but it was windy and cold. We had a nice dinner at the Rifugio and then settled in for the night. Most of us didn't sleep that great. It might have been a combination of the altitude, the wine we had, and the snoring. The next morning (today), we had a nice breakfast and then left to head downhill. We passed by a number of tunnels and an officers' ...

This hike goes around three famous towers and is very popular. We drove up to the Rifugio Auronzo and started out walking around the three towers. All around, in every direction, the views were spectacular. In one particular direction it looked just like Mordor from The Lord of the Rings trilogy! The limestone and dolomite rock walls are eroded in amazing patterns with sheer vertical walls and jagged crests along the skyline. The colouring is pinkish where the rock is dolomitic. There ...

... Val Gherdëina in South Tyrol and Canazei in the Fascia Valley in Trentino. Then we travelled east over Passo Pordoi to reach Arabba. We stopped there for some refreshments. From there it was a short journey north over Passo Campolongo back to Corvara. In winter, this pass can be crossed on skis, but today we luxuriated in the warm 24 degree sunshine. We plan to have a relaxing rest of the day and an early night because tomorrow brings a long day of ...

From Lienz, Austria to Corvara, Italy

This morning we wandered around the streets of Lienz - a medieval town in the Austrian state of Tyrol. We saw buildings dating from the 1200's. We then took the bike up to the Großglockner Alpine Pass in Austria. The weather was fine and sunny until we reached Franz-Josef Höhe where it cooled down to 3.4 degrees C, and once we reached the pass itself, it was 0.9 degrees C. There was fog ...
