Back on the Yucatan peninsula

Hi all, you´ve got Kate writing today.
It´s been a laid back couple of days since we last wrote. Yesterday we drove from Palenque along the beautiful blue gulf of Mexico to the walled city of Campeche. It was a prosperous port a few centuries ago, to the extent that it suffered frequent attacks by pirates, so the Spanish authorities put a wall around it with small forts to protect it. If you´ve seen Pirates of the Carribean, it has much the same kind of feel. We spent the day wandering aro...

Merida and Taz's Birthday

Today we were up early especially for my birthday... Ok so we didn't actually, but nothing could've beaten the day that followed. Breakfast meant a 1am NZ time birthday call from my parents with all the girls 'Aww-ing' me throughout it. Then quickly back to our rooms to grab our gear for every kiwi males birthday wish, a boat ride to go and look at Pink Flamingo's for 20 minutes or so. But obviously there's no real downside when this lead to an awesome fresh water spring for everybody to cool...

Visit Uxmal ruins then short drive to Merida.

Visit the Mayan ruins at Uxmal located inland between the cities of Campeche and Merida. Then drive to Merida where we check into an old colonial hotel and spend the night in town.

Diego resigns, we visit ruins and drink tequila

... I went to the Museum of Anthropology and they had one of those boards with people painted on the front and holes cut out so you can stick your head through and get your photo taken. Just like Blackpool! We did find a fabulous restaurant for dinner, which the same guy has run for 47 years. When I asked if the fish came whole or filleted he said he hasn't served whole fish for 38 years, since a customer almost choked to death on a fish bone. "And she still paid her bill!" he said ...

Tequila, it makes me happy

... I woke up at 9am and was still drunk but I had to get up because I wanted to put my camera in for repair. My camera had failed me once again in Panama, first the screen went blank and when I took the battery out to reset it I couldn´t get it back in again. So I managed to successfully negotiate the subway, and the local metro bus to get a long way across town to the WTC where Olympus was located. Even managed to ask a load of directions in Spanish and was fully ...

Merida - Poms, Cenotes and Swine flu

... had a coffee, found a place to get Brendan some new glasses (he left his in Puebla) and headed back home. We packed an esky and headed to the beach about 40 minutes from Merida, stopping at the nearest town to get some fried fish, rice and salad for lunch. When we got to the beach, we were the old people for kilometers as the tourist season has ended in this area of the coast, so we ate lunch, sunbaked, played with Mambo (jettes dog) and relaxed all afternoon. Once ...

Merida - The Remarkable Paseo de Montejo

... have liked nothing better than to have a peek into the history of Mexico’s railways.

In the end it was a Mexican standoff as a lack of time did not allow us to visit either of the two museums.

... to change things when I come back, but at least now I´m back into it. For example, I just bought this really great hamaca (hammock), which is so good that you can use it as a 2 person bed, for my new place! During the past month I´ve really come to like Merida, with its culture, friendly people. It´s also one of the fastest growing in Mexico, with new cars everywhere and a LightRail in the works. Perhaps I´ll be back in a couple of years to check it out again!

Flying home...

... the zips had been pulled off (the locked zips, all were locked) and the zips weren't were I had put them originally. The same for Bec's bag, and we just attributed it to loading and unloading (although I did mention I thought someone had gone through our luggage). Being naive, we really were quick to ascribe it to just loading and unloading. We caught a Sitio (safe radio taxi with designated fare of 127 pesos, about 12 US dollars) into the city ...
