... 100km east of Porto. They explained that even if you grew the same grapes in another region they would not make good Port because the weather and the soil is very different. I find it amazing that grapes can take on chocolaty and citrusy flavors because of the dirt it was grown in. They also showed us some of the vintage bottles they were selling. The oldest being from 1906 and selling at 3000euros a pop. After the tour we got to do the tasting. I decided ...
Porto, Northern Portugal, Portugal ktchris... been around for more than a thousand years or so. It's a very peaceful place, and for the most part this rubs off on it's inhabitants. Many days I enjoyed a walk by the river purely to sup on the calm. It was a nice change of pace from Madrid.
The first full day I was there of course I went around to taste some Port from every place that would give me some. It's an interesting drink, and much like wine in the sense that good Port is good, and bad Port is ...

... static caravans pitched up for the winter) all for the princely sum of Euro 8 per night! The surf in Ancora looked rather too frothy (pollution or a good head??!) for our liking and so we headed a few km down the road on the 6 Nov to Agucadoura, yet another deserted beach, where both of us donned our wetsuits, dived in with our boards and were unceremoniously dumped back on ...
Vila Praia de Ancora, Northern Portugal, Portugal lymandannabelleIt really is a shame we already booked our flight to France from Porto. We could have easily stayed an extra week in Portugal, there is so much to see here. But we did pretty good with our 2 days in Porto. It's right on the river and the ocean, and on one side of the river are tons of cute, old tiled homes, that look across to the other side of the bank where all of the old Port ...
Porto, Northern Portugal, Portugal tommcatt... city. Narrow streets tumbling down to the river with washing hanging from the windows. Lots of bridges, trams and traffic. One side of the river was the centre for the production of port. We went to one of them and sampled some of the product.
We stayed about 100 meters from the sea. Miles and miles and miles of golden sand and boardwalks. We did a lot of walking and a lot of cycling. Beautiful weather. We then moved onto Aveiro further down the coast.
... without the normal care and as we were going along we suddenly realized that the caravan had become detached. Fortunately the breakaway cable had worked. We reversed and reattached her, no harm having been done. We then had to do a 50 mile detour to get to the camp site. We spoke to other camper and caravaners who had had great ...

The next day we hit the road to Porto which was a substantial drive of about 5-6 hours. Luckily this is the day the weather decided to turn, so the bad weather was endured from the comfort of the car. We arrived late to Porto and checked into our less then elegant hostel. Our meal was no better. We ...
... us if we would like to go to dinner and drinks with them. Now you cant really say no so off we went. We ended up finding this pumping club that was massive and didn't close till 8 so the next day we where rather hungover and tired. One thing we did get a good quote from Fedra "You guys drink to fast and talk to fast" The next day it was onto the boring stuff more sightseeing ...
