... and nice to travel on a bike.

Surprise 2:
The roads in Italy are NOT at least better than in Greece and Turkey (why they are member in the European Union and don't provide proper roads!?). Meaning, that my back shock, which has started to leak damping oil since Turkey, is about to break this way the roads are bloody bumpy ...

Mr Clooney had the right idea

OK if you're being technical he's bought a place next door on Lake Como...Brad's probably holed up there right now..(sorry I digress...)....but all the northern lakes are beautiful, much more mountainous than Lake Annecy or Geneva, more dramatic views. GREAT spot, best yet - the pitches were so small 1 night I could hear snoring from the tent next door but no matter, the views were amazing, the water a nice temp and Stu and I could ...

... a hotel called Capo Casale. It was high up in the old town and the trek from the lobby to our room took us outside and up many staircases. Our room turned out to be in a separate old house that had been renovated into hotel rooms.

At night the streets were jam packed with Italian vacationers and we were about the only non-Italian tourists there. On our first night we had not made reservations at any restaurants and went from place to place ...

THRILLSEEKING in Castelmezzano!

... a glint in his eye, before you leave to fly across the canyon.

Trepidation was mounting, and all I could think to write was a message to my husband and sons – in case I never saw them again! I felt less angelic and more like a sacrificial lamb as I was trussed up in secure harness; logic and fear are not good bed fellow. And then I was off – flying at a speed of 120km an hour, racing ...

Enchanting in Scalea - Wine helps!

If you want a little extras during your vacations in Italy, you surely have to choose the right hotels. I’ve been a travel writer for many years, since I visited Las Vegas in 1998. I was so overwhelmed with this experience that I decided to travel the world in search for the best hotels.
Italy has no big hotels such as New York New York or Bellagio ...

(Note : All entries from now until Perth in November are way
shorter than they should be, as all out text got stolen, together with
our laptop, all our valuables, and almost our whole campervan, when it
was broken into and trashed in Rome at the end of October. Have a look
at that entry if you want to have a look at the damage the *******s
did. The next month or so´s text is written 6 ...

Sicily

Getting off the ferry and into traffic in Sicily was an eye opener for all of us. Sicily is a chaotic country and road rules do not apply. At one stage we are stopped at the traffic lights as it is on red and all the other drivers are going around us and weaving through the traffic coming the other way and to top it all off we are getting honked at as well. Our campsite in Catania was on a small cliff with rock pools below it and diving boards built out onto the rocks. The girls and ...

Pompeii

The temperature reached nearly 40 degrees when we arrived in Florence. We got the camper set up and then headed into town. Florence is such a relaxed, clean and pretty city. Mum was blown away again, especially by the unbelievable Dumo! We were very lucky get into a line that went directly in, as they then shut the doors and about 500 people we left standing in the heat for at least 40 minutes. We then headed to the Academia to view the real David. This is an amazing sculpture, so ...

Puglia, heel of Italy: intensity in 10 cities

... to see, especially in a cluster. The countryside through this region is gorgeous as well, low stone walls, olive groves, cute farmhouses and trullis everywhere. A funny aside: apparently when tax officials come to visit properties in this region to assess their liability, the residents dismantle any trullis on their properties in order to avoid paying tax on them, then rebuild them and often rent them out as holiday properties once the tax man has disappeared...a very ...
