... That seems a bit odd. Not sure where the sand would come from. Probably just my eyes. We pass through lots of little villages which are very agricultural. It's so much more satisfying going by train than flying. It's not a cheap way to travel though. A Eurail pass would be the way to go if you're moving around a lot. The trains in Italy have been pretty good actually. I'm a little surprised. Although they're not suitcase friendly. They're not flat ...

... we stopped and had some pizza (prosciutto for Maja and salami for Jon) :) We then took a stroll by the water and visited the gardens of Villa Melzi. They take landscaping very seriously here, and the effect is quite stunning and serene. Already some camellias are in bloom.
