... After their bags were taken off, we finally headed off, half an hour late. Not too bad - but my layover in Madrid is only 90 minutes! It took 2 hours to reach Madrid. Landing at 9am (10am local time). Still so early! 2014 country number 18 - Spain (yes it sort of counts even though I'm only in the airport for a few hours!!) A quick scan, and through security for transiting. I don't have that long to wait here. My next flight is at 11.40am (and it's already 10.40am!). ...

08.11am I'm lying in a hammock and feeling the cool breeze stroke my cheek. I've tricked my good iPod into thinking it has battery so am listening to Boxer Rebellion's Diamonds. I woke up to an argument in Spanish happening right outside my window- so right next to my head- but despite that now seems to be one of the most peaceful times of day. You'd think it'd be the night that was peaceful but the night belongs to, has been claimed by the animals around here so apart from the odd ...

... call. That call came, obviously, a day later, but before that happened I had a blissful time organizing my backpack, skyping with J, watching the Formula 1 qualifying and wandering around town for a bit. I didn't find much of interest in the city, and the bookstore mentioned in the guidebook seemed either gone or closed, but I did manage to secure a bus ticket to ...

... We drove up and up through the clouds! The winding roads made me feel sick. Through coffee plantations and small towns. San Jose - the capital of Costa Rica and my final destination of this trip. I arrived at 11am. Just a 3 hour drive from La Fortuna. The city is so close to the countryside, but is very urban. Buildings all around, up the sides of the hills. I got dropped off right at my friends house, which was great. No fussing around ...

... not to mention the whistles... This is the first place that real danger was felt and noticeable. The hotel we stayed at locked down the gates at 8pm (and for good reason). The whole town seems to shut down after dark and we're just glad we have a few locked doors between us and the streets. We know that there are other beaches around the area but after the experience and the bad feelings received from this place, we just wanted to get out of here and into ...
