... then we rushed the last 3/4 in about 5 minutes! We finally got to Ito and collected our car for three days. This region doesn't feature in the Lonely Planet but is a popular tourist spot for Japanese. We head south down the coast road and there are some lovely views. The countryside is rugged with little tunnels through the hills, vaguely reminiscent of the drive between the south of France and Italy with pretty towns built into the hillside. ... day out in the sun and we decide to forego the walk to the observation deck and continue our way. Which was just as well, as when we walked back to the car two busloads of tourists arrived. We know Commodore Perry landed here in 1854 and see a copy of one of his black ships docked ...

The local artisan explained his craft. It was very fascinating. There were beautiful intricate patterns made from dozens of varieties of trees. There were some very cleverly designed puzzle boxes. We bought a puzzle toy for Ian. -Lunch - western style buffet at Hakone Hotel. Nice variety ...

Never as good as the first time

... really enjoy my privacy: an onsen is so much better than taking a regular bath at home!

Back in my room I first had to prepare my bed, since I had a classic tatami-room with futon (first time!). After two nights I'm still not sure what to make of it. It's special, but I definitely prefer the comfort of my box spring.

But I didn't go to the Izu peninsula just to relax; I wanted to walk the famous coastal trail south ...
