... being Sunday the cathedral wasn't open till 12.30 so we went on a river cruise along the canal where we heard a little history and saw some of the old buildings where some of the only remaining parts date back to Saxon times. It was really enjoyable. With the rest of our free time we went in all directions....some shopping, some for lunch and a few of us guessed it....a patchwork shop :) ...

Luckily a beer here is served as a half pint and customer service is absolutely not a priority so we don’t get through as much as we could do (which is definitely a good thing for pocket, body and mind!) We heard a band playing and then realised we had chosen total prime position for our beers as they marched up the steps of the Town Hall. Shortly afterwards came the firemen and cadets (Pompiers) and then some old war veterans who shook hands with the Mayor. ...

Christmas Day. Somewhere in the middle of the North Sea. Today is the first of 2 days spent at sea before arriving back in Southampton. This, though, is far and away at the back of our mind. We have 2 full days of jolliment to get through (although 'get through' is probably the wrong turn of phrase as we intend to savour every moment!)
