... the casualties of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt itself is tiny, with only electric taxis. It is much colder than Lauterbrunnen even though it's on the border of Italy.
Switzerland is strange. It has no language of its own. In Bern, Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt they speak German but in Montreux they speak French, even the train announcements change languages. It gets confusing, so I just stick to greeting people in English most of the time. When I had arrived here I was fuming a bit because I ...
... We enjoyed an ok meal considering, and asked for our bill.
At the same time this guy that was sitting behind us got his bill and started carrying on in Italian at the owner. We think he may have been a bit drunk and Witek could understand a little bit of it and said that he was apparently complaining that his wine had cost him 8 euro for the glass! He was creating quite a scene and the waiter invited him inside to discuss the matter further. As he stood up he ...
We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... on the snow with a lovely view from Mont Blanc on one side and the Italian plains on the other. In between there were dozens of skiers and snowboarders enjoying some summer runs. After our snow hike, we took a Tram down to do a 10K hike to Hornlihut, starting at 2500m. Tom was suitably freaked out by the ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertownOn Friday, we continued to "get the most" from our unlimited passes by taking the kids up to 3100m and the top of the Rothorn. Our journey took us up a Cog Railway (entirely inside a tunnel) to a Gondola. From ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland kramertown... walls and ceiling were also made of ice, at least four feet thick. At look-out peak, you could see Germany, France and Italy--it was the greatest view imaginable. To complete our trip to the top, we rented snow discs and flew down a snow hill, on a less-steep part of the Alps. We walked in knee-deep snow, and Paul couldn't help but chuck a few snow balls at nearby skiiers before leaving. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience. As we came back down, we had to strip our ...
Gimmelwald, Swiss Alps, Switzerland paul-jules... thankful we were no longer up in the mountains without shelter. We later cooked up the rest of our pasta, mixing it with eggs and our leftovers from last night, which was probably the worst meal yet. We made plans to catch the 7am cable car down from Grindelwald to Stechelberg, got our bags all ready and talked about showering before realizing we could wait the 18 hours of so 'till we got to Milan. Italy here we come. It's bed time, from Gimmelwald, Switzerland.
Gimmelwald, Switzerland nglickAfter our hike up the mountain, people had different ideas of what they wanted to do the next day. One of the things I really wanted to do in Switzerland was to go Paragliding. I had seen the videos and it looked like a blast. A few days ago a few others from the hostel went and although they had a great time it was expensive and only lasted about 15 minutes. Luckily we had been chatting with this hard-core ...
